Kenmore 81614 Bagged Canister Vacuum with Pet PowerMate, Purple

Wish I'd bought this on Amazon instead of in the store. It would have a been a little cheaper. That being said, I'm very happy with this vacuum so far. Kenmore has made this vacuum in various versions for decades and this is my second one. The first one lasted about 14 years before it finally gave up the ghost. I can't speak to the longevity of this version yet, but it appears to be the same high quality, just with a few updated features that I appreciate having. The only other vacuum I've owned was a very high end ultra light weight Riccar upright that I used for years in my housekeeping business. That being said, I had housekeeping customers who wanted me to use my machine and customers who wanted me to use theirs, so I've probably used a lot more vacuums than the average consumer over the years.

In my experience, this is the best vacuum cleaner you're going to get outside of a dedicated vacuum cleaner shop. Shark and Dyson are extremely clumsy and gimmicky, and no matter what the marketing says they lose suction worse than bagged model vacuum machines. They are also very messy to dump the dust cup from compared to changing a vacuum cleaner bag. In my experience, if you change the bags and filters on time on a high quality vacuum and give it a good cleaning every once in a while, it won't loose suction.

The design on this Kenmore is very well thought out. Honestly, I can't understand why power team canisters aren't a lot more popular. When I would use a customer's upright with attachments I was always annoyed with short hoses, machines toppling over when reaching for something using the attachments, and dealing with getting the hose in and out of the machine was usually a pain. On top of all those annoyances, you can't even vacuum your hard floors with an upright w/ attachments. With this canister machine, it's really simple. You just push a button with your foot and the wand pops right out. Go ahead and suck up that pile of paper clips your kids left on the floor, the hose is huge so they won't get stuck. Go ahead and reach for those cobwebs on the ceiling. The wand telescopes so it won't take you any time to assemble a wand, AND you're machine won't fall over while you do it. Go ahead and vacuum under the couch. The power head has a low profile and the wand lays flat against the floor, so you can get under all but the tightest places. Unlike my last Kenmore canister, the power had seems to work just as well on hard floors as carpets, so I don't even have to change the head when going from room to room or rug to bare floor! I love it.

When I got this I assumed it wouldn't vacuum my carpets as well as my Riccar. (I wouldn't have even replaced the Riccar, but I shorted the circuit board with moisture and the machine was so beat up from years of cleaning houses with it, it wasn't worth the repair cost anymore.) I was alright with the idea that it might take a few more minutes to vacuum the carpet because I figured I was getting the convenience of being able to spot vacuum corners and couch cushions as I did entire rooms in trade for being able to sweep up ground in dog hair in one pass. I was wrong. I hadn't had a working vacuum for two weeks in June in a house with two big shedding dogs when I finally decided to go back to the Kenmore canister. The Kenmore sucked it right up in one pass. I was very happy! As a bonus, it's a lot easier to push across my relatively thick, plush, carpet than my wonderful Riccar ever was.

There are a couple of things about this Kenmore canister that concern me in terms of longevity. The big back wheels seem kind of flimsy. I worry that one of them might snap off eventually. It seems like a really odd design choice because everything else about the machine appears to be well thought out both in terms of usability and durability. My other concern is that the pieces inside the metal extension wand that hold the attachments on are plastic and not metal. They do, however, seem to be pretty sturdy plastic and they hold firmly. I can't remember if my last Kenmore canister had plastic or metal clips, but I do remember they never broke over the years that the machine cleaned up after lots of pets in a big, dirty, farm house.

All in all, I really don't think you can get a better designed, more powerful, or durable vacuum machine at this price. The only other machine I know of that comes close in terms of usability is the Meile canister power team and it costs three times as much. Plus, the variable suction control for the Kenmore is on the handle instead of the canister, unlike the Meile, and the bags are cheaper. The Meile is probably more likely to last a lifetime though, so if you've got the cash it's probably a worthy investment. I didn't have a grand to drop on a vacuum cleaner, so I got this Kenmore and I couldn't be happier with it.

I have used this vacuum for about 3 weeks now and so far I am very impressed. I esp. wanted it to remove pet hair. I have two cats and one dog that shed continually and their hair just seems to be impossible to remove from my couch. The attachment that was provided does a great job and more than meets my expectations. I am also using it in the car since the dog rides with me.
I also like the vacuum as it is light weight and easy to maneuver. It has easy accessible switches to go from carpet to bare floor or to change the level of the carpeting. The attachments are located within the canister so are not falling off while you are working. I would recommend this product.

Overall, the vacuum cleaner works very well. The power brush can swivel left-right, making it easy to get into tight spots. Performance seems good, and the dirt sensor light is helpful. A few minor complaints:
The canister module is very loud, with an irritating whine. (But at least it creates a strong air flow.)
The dirt sensor light seems to have a delay before turning off. It comes on quickly but then remains on for a few seconds even if there's no dirt flow, so it means one continues to vacuum already-clean spots. A shorter off-delay would be better.
The cord rewind mechanism is so weak that one must hand feed the cord into the machine; worse, the cord is made from a very stiff material so that when it's unwound it forms stiff tangles that pull the plug out of the wall socket before the cord will straighten out. I've left the cord unwound for over a month in hopes that it will relax, but no luck.
The specified cloth HEPA bag seems too large for the canister, so one must fold it over on itself to get it to fit. (However I found that when the "bag full" light comes on, I can take the bag out, shake the dirt down to the folded-over parts of the bag, and be able to use the bag for a while longer before the light comes on again.)

Update Mar 2019 - After some back and forth with Kenmore they have fully backed their product and found a satisfactory resolution to some issues I was having with the canister vacuum.

Pros: Lighted wand - super suction - versatile - thoughtful placement of tools - carpet to hard flooring solution works great! - variable suction levels - excellent sale price making it a good value - Kemore is alive and supporting their products even in Spring of 2019.
Cons: Difficult to pull across even low pile carpet - some parts seem fragile (foot lever for floor attachment angle)
This is the 3rd Kenmore canister vac I've owned in 35 years (1st one was already 15yrs old and was almost impossible to kill). The last was the Kenmore Progressive (2nd model to the top of line). It worked great for the 1st 15 years then slowly broke part after part from just average use (low pile carpet/wood floors). It always held suction and most parts were easy to find and replace.

At first I wanted to say "I love it love it!" BUT, with all the snazzy design of so many compartments - each springs open without much movement and when marshalling thru a room - the canister tends to roll over. So, rather than constantly stop - reassemble the compartments - reattached the HEPA filter and hope the back doesn't pop open in the next 2 seconds of use -- I had to duck tape these compartments - and take out the wood floor attachment - so it doesn't stay with the unit. So much for the spring up to attach feature. This unit was way over-designed to being unusable. Just give me the 12 amps of power, power nozzles and other attachments and a canister that can take being dragged across a room and not lose its HEPA filter immediately; attachments or roll over. Because I didn't know the floor attachment had fallen out - it became a new 'toy' for my baby shepherd who was helping me do the vacuuming.

This handy small appliance tackles hardwood, laminate and carpet with ease thanks to its multipurpose all-floors design. A POP-N-GO floor brush located in the front storage case makes quick work of messes while a motorized Pet PowerMate attachment lifts stubborn hair, dander and more from carpeting, baseboards and furniture without issue. If you want to make housework less of a hassle, make sure you invest in this well-made, reliable bagged canister vacuum from Kenmore. To replace the filter cover door after it has been removed: When replacing the filter back into the unit, notice lip on filter and red arrow indicating insertion direction of the filter. If filter is inserted correctly, there should be tabs on the outside of the filter for easy grip and removal. To replace the filter cover, insert Filter Cover Tabs into their slots at the top first before inserting the release latch. Secure the cover release latch by pressing downward (opposite direction of the arrow), so the tab is inserted securely into the latch. This will prevent shaking of the cover and filter during use.

If you're a neat freak/crazy person like me please read this....
I've had 2 different Kenmore canisters in the last 10 years. This is my 3rd. Quality has not been Kenmore's strongest suit. I've had to replace cords, had wheels that fall off, and knuckles on the wands break, had enough parts from 2 vacuums to make a Frankenstein one and make that one last another year. I finally had to break down and get a new one.
I'm gonna tell you why I like (not love) this vacuum.
First the good....seems like some of the bad design flaws were addressed. The wand has no plastic knuckles except on the bottom where the power head detaches. It's thicker and feels like is has some beef to it.
Second, the suction has improved. There is a control on the handle now (it used to be on the wand, that broke too on my old ones). When you turn up the suction the power head acts like it is self propelled. Noticable!
Now for the not so impressed part....
Biggest problem....the wand has a really big knuckle that attaches to the power head and because of it you can't use the wand without an attachment. The knuckle is so big it no longer fits between the cupboard and the fridge or between the washer and dryer the plastic goes right to the floor so you have to stop what you are doing and get out an attachment that now no longer fits where I need it. I'm gonna have to go on line to get an attachment for my attachment:(
Next, there is an attachment for hardwood floors that has a pop-up lid on the machine for easy change out. When I'm vacuuming the steps I bump that compartment and it's always popping open. I don't have hardwood so I may just tape it shut.
In conclusion, I do like this vacuum but not love it. Quality is better (I still think the knuckle at the power head could be a problem) but ease of use for me is just not there.

First, I’m a fan of canister vacs. Second, I have owned this model for 4 years. I had the opportunity to give it to someone who really needed a vac. I searched for a replacement but came back to this model because of my positive experience.
Pros: reliable, dependable, sturdy, usefulness of onboard tools especially the pet hair attachment (I have 3 Siberian Huskies), the “crossover” feature which quickly detaches the hose from the beater brush, adjusts to a variety of rug/carpet piles, easily portable
Cons: wish it had a larger vacuum bag capacity

This is a GREAT vacuum cleaner. Lots of thoughtful accessories and useful, easy to use. Nice Long Cord. Quiet. VERY, VERY powerful Motor. Adjustable sucking power. Carpet attachment works nicely and is easy to engage or disengage. HOWEVER, *** As another reviewer stated ALWAYS buy "Type Q" replacement bags. This unit has so MUCH power that it can suck a hard object right through a paper based bag. This will in turn allow anything to be sucked into the Motor area and COULD compromise the Motor. Type Q bags cost a little more but, it's worth it to have this sturdy protection. I ignored this advice and used a paper Type "C" bag and sure enough as it got full I got SOMETHING hard drawn into the bag and blew a hole in it! I didn't discover this until changing the bag days later. What a MESS. The Motor protector filter saved me but, it was a close call. I LOVE using this product and it works wonderfully with so many conveninent features. Just buy "Q" bags!!

I LOVE this vacuum! For the price, it does the best job picking up dirt and pet hair. I have a rabbit and a very fluffy dog, which translates into a lot of fur around the house. This vacuum does a great job picking up all that pet hair. There's a reason it's always a recommended vacuum by Consumer Reports.

This is my second Kenmore canister vacuum--I previously had a much older model, which was a hand-me-down and lasted approximately 15 years until the power head had an electrical issue. I used a hand-me-down Dirt Devil for 2 months, but my house just got dirtier and dirtier. Finally splurged on this new Kenmore and am SO happy I did. The new vacuum is definitely a little less solid than the older one, but it's still a great vacuum. I followed others' advice and kept my old attachments. To me, the most marked difference between the old and new attachments is the upholstery brush attachment. I use that to get pet hair off the couch, and I quickly had to revert back to the old brush, which was wider and does a better job picking up hair. I think maybe if I were buying this vacuum for the first time (i.e., didn't have old attachments to keep), I would have to get the 600-series instead of the 400-series for this reason.

Still, I am so happy with my purchase. I strongly believe that this is the best vacuum for carpets and hard floors within this price range. I read on Consumer Reports that it even outperforms the "high-end vacuums," which is no surprise.

Besides using the vacuum for normal floor cleaning, you can easily clean the edges and corners of your room with the Kenmore 81614 canister vacuum cleaner. This Kenmore canister vac combines the affordable price, quality and performance in a unit that are design for all-surfaces cleaning including the pet hair This is a 2-motor system that comes with powerful suction power (12 amps) and you can use it to clean all types of floors including bare floors, carpets and dog hairs. The vacuum cleaner is provided with adjustable suction power and can be used according to the type of material or surface being cleaned. You can reduce the power for delicate carpets, furniture and so on. It is designed such that the airflow is strong and consistent throughout the cleaning process. I Include this as if you have the suction on LOW you might think the thing is broken The cleaner is provided with HEPA filters unlike some of the other filters which are available in the market. HEPA filters help in getting rid of allergen and irritants which can cause asthma and other respiratory problems. It is especially useful for people prone to respiratory issues. The machine comes with 28″ long power cord length and it has auto rewind. To extend the vacuum reach, you can use the accompany telescopic wand. The integrated bare floor nozzle helps in cleaning the hard floors off the dirt and dust easily. A Pop-N-Go floor brush can also help you save more time when switching the cleaning from carpet to hard floor.
The vacuum cleaner has an easy grip and can be used for above floor cleaning of even the staircase. The suction control on the handle can let you easily adjust the power suction needed while cleaning different surfaces. The effectiveness and popularity of canister vacuum cleaners push the Kenmore company to provide several great series of canisters that will be a cut above the rest. This is to convince their potential buyers to buy their product over the other. you WILL not get a vacuum with better designed, more powerful, and reliable machine at this PRICE. and for me that is the keyword PRICE.
