They work well AFTER you get an o-ring to seal them. After seeing the issue others have, water leaking AROUND the filter instead of going through it, and making very certain it was correctly seated, I put a thin rubber o-ring around the filter (most hardware stores carry these) which is reusable (I've had one o-ring for 7 filters so far). The o-ring makes seating it firmer as I push the filter in, and SEALS the filter so water must go through it. Get a thin one, it must fit between the filter and the wall of the insert area. I put the ring about 3/4" from the top of the filter, then push it in, and I can feel the o-ring "rolling" up the filter as I push and it seats the filter in very firm and tight. **See pics. This about a 2" o-ring, and they are cheap. Brita should use this idea and send a small o-ring with each 3 pack or pitcher.
I think people who are complaining about the water quality don't realize the water is leaking around the filter and not being filtered. After the O-Ring, it takes MUCH longer for the water to go through the filter, so I know it's working.
The quality of water that comes out of these filters is fantastic, but they clog within a couple weeks for me. I live in New York City, which is known for having darn fine tap-water, so it's not like I'm shoving lake sludge through these filters. Fortunately, Brita has been generous enough to replace the filters as they know there is a problem with them, but the solution to that problem has been delayed repeatedly. Bummer!
EDIT: Brita eventually stopped replacing their faulty Longlife filters so I'm downgrading the review to 1 star. The filters are too expensive to replace every 2 weeks, especially since they ought to last 6 months. I hope Brita gets their act together with these.
SECOND EDIT: Brita finally fixed the filters and sent me a pair of the new version free of charge. The filter I installed has worked perfectly for over a month now.
THIRD EDIT (April 5, 2019): six months later, the new version of the Longlast filter continues to filter at a good clip. It is slightly slower than when it was new, now about 15 minutes per liter.
Bought a new Brita for someone in our household who's convinced tap water is officially the worst thing ever, even if where I live is *renowned* for its tap water ---- so, needless to say, I wanted to make sure I wasn't spending crazy amounts on the filters when I was happy with my tap water to begin with.
I hadn't comparison shopped them before, beyond what was available on Amazon, but felt like the 3 pack was a decent price online... so went for it.
Let's just say I went to the supermarket recently and saw how much a pack of three replacement filters were there.... and got total sticker shock!
Needless to say, I'll continue to buy my replacement filters on Amazon.
(As for the quality of the filters: they're official Brita, and Brita really does make a difference -- especially if you don't live in a location with tap water as good as mine. But if you have good tap water, then I really don't think it's necessary -- but your mileage will vary!)
I used to buy my Brita replacement filters at Costco, however, I discovered that Amazon Subscribe & Save was a better option for me in terms of convenience and price.
I really like the newly designed sleek tops of the filters that make it *much* easier to insert and to remove them from the pitcher. You simply hold onto the top, which acts as a handle, and place them into the pitcher. Similarly, you just hold onto the "handle" when you need to remove the filters. Previously, I would struggle to place the filters in and I needed to tip the pitcher sideways in order to replace the filters.
I also think that these new filters work better than the previous filters. I've found that I have a lot less black particles in the compartment where the filter is located in the pitcher. It also no longer "pops out" when I tip the pitcher to pour out the last drops of water, which had been an issue with the previous filter model. In addition, the water seems to taste cleaner : )
The two filters arrived packaged in a small brown box labeled 'Replacement Filters.' I was surprised that they weren't sent in the usual Brita branded packaging, however, upon opening the package I realized that this was a more efficient way to receive the product. I can also store the smaller box more easily in the kitchen drawers.
Very easy to install/insert. Filtering process is not fast, as it is filtering your water from contaminants. It is NOT going to be fast, as some of the 1 and 2 star users have complained. It is doing it's job - making clear, clean, tasty water by filtering, but it does not take long (less than 4 minutes to fill a pitcherful).
Have purchased this 3 pack four times (each filter lasts around 90 days). Very inexpensive for the job that they perform - and these are the OEM Brita filters, so the fit and finish is perfect. Going to buy another 3 pack as soon as I finish this review (had to comment on the 1 and 2 star users that just don't get it).

Description
Keep tap water healthier and tasting better longer with Brita Longlast Pitcher Replacement Filters. Made with pleated filter technology for 3X longer life compared to 40 gallon filters. Longlast replacement filters reduce lead, asbestos, and cadmium impurities that can adversely affect your health over time (substances reduced may not be in all users' water). Change the Longlast filters every 120 gallons, about every 6 months for the average family, for best performance. The pull top cap on these filters makes insertion and removal easy. With activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor, these filters deliver great-tasting water and maintain a healthy level of fluoride, an additive in water (applies to fluoridated municipal tap water). The fibrous matrix in the filter holds active ingredients in place so no black flecks appear in your water. One LongLast Filter can replace 900 standard 16.9 ounce water bottles.
I purchased the Brita longlast filter because of the lab tests which show it as comparable to Zero water filters, but as less expensive. For the first couple of flushes, water will seep down the sides. As you have to dispose of this water anyways, it doesn’t matter. After about the third time of draining, the filter seats in and the water appears to only go through the filter. I have a small Brita pitcher (32 oz.) and it takes only minutes to fill. There was an earlier problem with the filters, I believe, but the Brita website said it had been resolved. My only hope is that it removes all the contaminants that their lab tests show. I have been unable to find information from third party testers for the Brita Longlast which filters more than the Every day filters (the latter which, supposedly don’t filter much at all).
So I picked this up after getting tired of filling gallon bottles at the store. It’s such a good filter to accompany a great system. HOWEVER: installing the filter the right way is crucial.
Our first filter that came with system lasted 4 months. Then we bought this replacement. The first filter in this two pack lasted - few weeks. That’s it. At our last fill it took 3 hours to filter the 20 oz of water I had put in. Or normal.
Thankfully, Brita has superior customer service. Reached out right away, gave them the product code information and they are sending out a replacement.
I tell you this because the system and this filter is worth the money. If you happen to encounter a similar problem with the filter simply contact Brita and they will fix it.
I bought 2 longlast filters at the end of Oct. 2018 and replaced one after 4 months. My husband and I drink at least 80 ounces from the container every day, so I guess the filter lasted a long time. I don't have the container with the digital indicator so thought the filter would last until May 2019, but one day it just stopped filtering water through so I knew it was done. :) Plus, I had begun noticing that the water didn't taste as good. Thought it was my imagination, but no, it wasn't. The filter make a a BIG difference in the taste of the water. I have no complaints. One thing to note, however...when you put the filter in the container you MUST get the filter good and wet and really push it down into the hole and maybe even hold it there as you fill the pitcher. Otherwise it comes loose and pops up and you have to filter the whole container of water again. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.
I've been a long-time user of "regular" Brita filters, not realizing for a long time that - contrary to what I'd assumed - they actually were filtering out harmful particulates like lead, and not just (mostly) making your water taste a bit better.
Once I learned that recently when shopping for new filters and seeing these longlast filters, I hesitatingly pulled the trigger on a pack of these. Seeing all the same reviews on this page I'm sure you do about no drainage, problems, etc, I was 50% sure I just bought useless trash that I was going to have to throw away. To my pleasant surprise, I've had absolutely no issues with mine. The only thing I can think of that might of made a difference is that after pre-filtering a few Brita's worth water, I shook my filter up and down a bit hoping to 'loosen' the filter stones a little bit, and then I've just left in in my Brita since.
Don't get me wrong, it definitely is a bit slower than my old filters, but it's nothing so crazy as what reviewers here have described, and i've never had a situation where I needed water but am waiting for the filter to do it's work.
Maybe I was lucky and got one of the few non-defective units, but for now, I'm happy that I have a working filter that is actually improving my health and filtering out bad contaminants, and have no complaints. Recommended.
I bought the 3-pack filters elsewhere. However, I found that the new filter style leaked some water down the side of the filter after the install, instead of going through the inside element. After looking at it, I pushed down harder on the replacement filter to seat it correctly. The upper lip of the replacement filter is now just below the lower lip of the housing. That fixed the problem. Now all water exits through the four holes in the filter bottom. The older filters did not require as much elbow grease. Hope this helps those complaining about leaking filters or tap-tasting filtered water. We've enjoyed our Brita for years and I hope it continues to last.
