Refrigeration Technologies RT201B Nylog Gasket/Thread Sealant

Refrigeration Technologies RT201B Nylog Gasket/Thread Sealant

Refrigeration Technologies RT201B Nylog Gasket/Thread Sealant

Good Stuff. The Amazon description doesn't help much with selecting the right version - they make Red and Blue for different applications.

This is what the manufacturer's website says about the Blue:

"Composition
Synthetic refrigeration oil

Compatibility
The Blue Label Nylog, passed the sealed tube test in mixtures of POE, PAG, mineral, and alkyl benzene oils in the presence of HFC-134a, and also in cross blends of CFC and HCFC refrigerants. Nylog Blue has recently passed seal tube testing with R-410a in POE and PVE lubricants.

Recommendations
The Blue Label Nylog can be used universally or specifically with an HFC bound synthetic oil system."

Installing my first mini split I wasn't sure to buy Red or Blue. I did some research and learned I needed BLUE. Nylog Blue is derived from polyol ester oil (POE) for 410A or 134 refrigerant systems. Very miscible with existing POE circulating in lines, so if spilled inside flare it is ok & will dissolve rapidly on start up. Great for lubing flare tool cone. Great to use on both the flare face & the flare back side (where copper rubs on flare nut for lube during tightening). HVAC threads are straight (not tapered as pipe threads) and only job is to provide mechanical compression of mating flare surfaces. If put on threads compensate for increased torque which will happen. USES: So brass flare doesn't catch, gall, or bind copper. Great for gaskets, O-rings, Schrader valves. For vacuum fittings. For checking for leaks on Schrader cores (won't contaminate as water based bubble checker would). Great for automotive AC. NOT for water, gas, hydronic systems. Approved for use in food processing areas. Will never harden, dry, swell, or shrink.

Nylog Red is a mineral oil based product and was NOT what was needed for my mini split 410A refrigerant system.

Never used this before on my flare connections, saw the product just by chance. While checking out my old tried and true vacuum pump with my new CPS VG200 micron gauge, I realized that my vacuum pump wasn't as tried and true, it wouldn't pump down lower than 1750 microns, checking out the system I applied some of the Nylog blue to the 3/8" vacuum adapter flare connection, the pump brought the gauge down to 17 microns within less than a minute. Leak solved, pump is now definitely tried and true again.

I could not stop a small leak on the mini split line set that I was installing. I found a story about this product online and decided to try it. I had been stumped with this leak at the condensing units flair connection. It was very frustrating for a good customer to watch me try everything that I knew to do and still have a leak. I am a 30 year hvac license holder. Just a small amount of this product fixed it.

I checked with my two favorite supply houses and they were unaware of this product. I will just have to educate them on how well it works.
NOTE: If you are installing a mini split unit order some of this now. You will be glad you did.

Refrigeration Technologies RT201B NYLOG-GASKET/THREAD SEALANT

I used this sealant on all the flare connections of a recent mini-split installation.

Used a tiny stiff paint brush to smear this sticky gel on the male and female flares, on the male & female threads, and on both sides of copper flare gaskets. There's way more than enough to do one heat pump install.

For brass-to-brass flare connections, add a copper flare gasket. Without a copper gasket, you're left with a leak-prone brass-on-brass connection – and even with this sealant, given that HVAC-R systems operate at very high pressures, it might leak. That’s because brass is too hard to reliably conform to minor flare imperfections, whereas softer [flare gasket] copper is more likely to conform and result in no leaks. For example: Midland Metal 10088 Copper 1/2 Flare Gasket (Pack Of 10)

I used a Yellow Jacket vacuum pump to achieve a deep vacuum (near 30" Hg), then closed a hose's ball valve, and waited two hours. The vacuum gauge didn't change its reading, indicating that there were NO leaks. Several months later, there have been no leaks, and I don’t expect any. That Pioneer mini-split does a terrific job on cooling and heating.

Worth every penny & highly recommended for R410A flare fittings.

Customer Images: to the right of the unit, mounted on the wall, is a Sporlan model HPC-103 bi-directional filter / drier, which, according to Sporlan, absorbs refrigerant moisture, acid, solid contaminants, and varnish from oil breakdown.

Above the filter is a Sporlan SA-12FM “See-All” sight glass. I.e., with the mini-split running, you can plainly see the refrigerant swirling past the sight glass and the center spot is green [indicating dry] as it is supposed to be. This would be useful information for an HVAC technician servicing the system.

Description

Refrigeration Technologies nylogâ" gasket thread sealant and assembly lube #rt201b. Product with good quality.

After tons of reviewing DIY videos and manuals for installing a mini-split a/c system, I found that Blue Nylog was highly recommended. Being my first a/c system install attempt, I figured using an extra level of sealing power to prevent leaks would be cheap insurance. Sure enough, newbie error when tightening down my first fitting, my torque wrench slipped and I ruined the end of my lineset. Ran to the store and bought a cheap flare tool, made my first ever flare, ran a bead of Nylog around the compression nut female end and the system's male fitting, threw the torque wrench to the side, and tightened with two crescent wrenches. Finished my install and leak tested all my fittings while holding my breath and with my fingers crossed. No leaks! Put it on of your port caps, too. Get the blue Nylog for any of your a/c work on your car or your home. For the cost of a nice lunch out it is worth it.

A real life saver for me. I had trouble holding a seal for auto A/C vacuum check and, after a couple of attempts, suspected the quick connects were not sealing properly. I placed a bead of Nylog around the lip of the High and Low side ports before reattaching the quick connectors and was then able to maintain vacuum and confirm the system was properly sealed. Without this product I would not have gotten a proper seal to confirm the connectors not the a/c system was the reason for lost vacuum. And, of course, I used Nylog on all my auto a/c o ring connections. So glad I stumbled upon this product while researching o ring lubrication.

I have been in the HVACR trade over 50 yrs. Have always had issues getting my hose connections and fittings not to leak. Heard about this product and decided to give it a try. One drop on each connection and no more leaks from my hoses while pulling a vacuum. Make my life much easier. I would recommend this to anyone in the trade worth its weight in gold. Saves time and allows you to do a better job. That means it helps you earn more money and build a better reputation.

I used this on my first Mini split DIY install. Having very little experience with flair fittings, I was very worried about leaks from the 4 connections that have to be made. After some research this product sounded like a "must have" to avoid flair fitting leaks on a/c connections. I installed 2 mini splits with this bottle and still have over half a bottle left. I was very happy that none of the 8 fittings leaked. After using this product I do not believe I would ever connect a flair fitting without applying this.

Had leaks the line set before applying nylog. No matter how much I tightened the flanges, leaks still existed. Put some of this on the flange and nipple and leaks were gone. No need to cut the flanges and use a flange tool to make a new flange. Just used the line set that came with the AC and no problems so far for nine months. Seems like a product that should be used with every install for extra piece of mind. Would not do another installation without this stuff.
