So I bought this vacuum cleaner as a replacement for a Shark Professional Lift Away canister vaccum. The shark had some issues, namely:
1. It had an attachment tube through which all the suction power at some point went. This tube was made of a material that kept cracking and we had to duct tape it. In the end it was more tape than tube and this led to a loss of suction.
2. I was absolutely SICK of emptying the canister and digging out pet hair and inhaling the dust and cleaning the filter etc. It was nasty.
My wife and I made a deal for the housework. She would do the downstairs and I the upstairs. Since the upstairs is 100% frize carpet, the vacuum quickly became a point of contention for me.
I did my research (A LOT OF IT) and came to Oreck. I didn't feel like shelling out 500+ dollars for one of the super top of the line home versions that are aesthetically pleasing and instead opted to pocket the cash and buy this workhorse for 150 bucks. And I am IMPRESSED.
We have 3 dogs and a cat. The dogs are a Siberian Husky, a German Shepard, and a St. Bernard. Needless to say we a have a LOT of pet hair. Some reviewers have mentioned that they didn't think the oreck was effective for this. These people are lying to you. Our carpets are now amazingly clean. This thing sucks up debris and pet hair like nothing I've ever seen. Its a BEAST. And its lightweight. The bags hold a LOT and when its time to change them out you just pull em, toss em and replace em.
They are cheap. I've been through 2 in a month and got a 25 pack for like 15 bucks. Get the scent tabs. You can really smell them at first, after the first couple of days you cant smell anything, which hopefully is the point.
Some people have mentioned a burning rubber smell when they started using the vaccuum. I noticed this too, but I think it is just a burn in phenomenon as it quickly went away.
The replacement and maintenance parts (belt/roller) are both on amazon for under 10 bucks. I expect to change the belts and rollers on occasion and have this vacuum for a decade.
It doesn't have any attachments. it just cleans the carpets and floors superbly well. We've used it downstairs on wood and rugs and tile with no issues and it has pulled up loose pet hair and cat litter with no problems.

I bought this vacuum 13 months ago now and I figured it's time for a short review.
I'll start with the pros:
1) this thing is lightweight, about as much as a gallon of milk. My previous vacuum was a cheapo (by cheap I mean about the same price as this) dirt devil and it easily weighed 20 pounds.
2) the vacuum is easy to work on if you ever have to. You can have it apart in 10 or 15 minutes with nothing more than a #2 phillips, swapping the motor shouldn't be more than a 20 minute job but judging by the size of the thing it should last a while, the carbon brushes are also huge so I don't expect to have to shell out the $75 to replace those any time this decade.
3) it's powerful, the aforementioned beefy motor sucks up everything just fine, from stale cereal my 1 year old hid behind the couch for later to my wife's forgotten hair ties to every single cord I forget to get out of the way before I start vacuuming. I expect the belt would give out before the motor would if she ever jams up.
I see folks talking about not being able to pick up stuff against the walls but if you go in front ways instead of sideways it'll suck it up good.
4) swapping the bags is easy, just hold on each side of the hole on the stiff cardboard part and push straight toward the port.
5) it's cheap! You don't get a lot of features but it's a vacuum for crying out loud! You get a lot of suck for the dollar.
Cons:
1) No attachments but you should know that already. It's a vacuum and that's it.
2) loud as hell, but it isn't like you have to listen to it all day every day (unless you do, then get some earplugs)
3) those belts are a pain to swap but you only gotta do it once or twice a year, just swapped my first one today after 13 months of use. Be prepared to manhandle your vacuum to get the brush reseated once the belt is on it.
In conclusion, you get what you pay for, Oreck compromises on features to give you a good vacuum for the price.
Back to the basics..
Don't let the out-dated ergonomics and style of this Oreck fool you.
I’ve owned a shark, a dyson, Hoover, kennmore, Electrolux, even a variety of wet-dry vacuums. This Oreck out performs them all, on both tile & carpet.

I love this vacuum cleaner! Here are some things I think make this vacuum cleaner great:
It is very light and therefore easy to carry around the house. It's powerful and has great suction. It has a very long cable which allows me to take care of the entire floor by only plugging it once. It allows you to go from carpet to bare floor without having to stop to make adjustments. It has a bag allowing me to easily and cleanly dispose of the dirt.
The reason why I didn't give this product 5 stars is that even though the vacuum cleaner is a work horse doing a fantastic job, there are some useful features that are missing such as bigger wheels to roll the vacuum in its upright position (you have to lift it to move it around when not in use on carpet), no hose to easily take care of stairs and a bit more noise than other vacuums I owned before.
All in all I'm very happy with this vacuum cleaner and would definitely recommend it.
My husband and I own a small retail store but we were going through vacuum cleaners every couple years. The wheels would either fall off or this past one actually started blowing dust out of it when you turned it on! Kind of defeats the purpose of vacuuming. So we decided to go with the Oreck this time, like that it is still made in the USA, it is not heavy, not extra attachments to deal with and has a nice long cord that I can plug in and it vacuums the whole store! It is loud, but I vacuum as soon as we get in or after we close so that is not a problem. It sucks up all the dirt and dust and leaves that people bring in off the street and I also like the little edge brushes that seem to get the dirt off the floor close to the display cabinets.
It is definitely the best vacuum we have used in the store! I highly recommend it.

No more bagless for us. Emptying those dust,hair,flea filled cups into the garbage and having it poof back in my face was disgusting and was bad for my allergies. I gave both bagless vacs to Goodwill and bought two bagged vacuums, 1 was this Oreck, And we love it! At 57 I worry about me and my wife pushing around a vac that is too heavy and hurting our backs.. The Oreck is light and easy to move and doesn't strain our backs. Pull the bag out and put it in the trash, install a new bag and ready to go.
I love this ugly thing so much. It obviously doesn't have the look of the popular Dyson or Sharks but it definitely works as well or better! I like having a bagged vacuum because I hate emptying the bagless canisters because no matter what, dust gets everywhere - especially in the air. The bags for this vacuum are huge and last a long time. It transitions really well from carpet to hard floors - and does a great job cleaning hard surfaces. It doesn't blow things, it just sucks them up. It is super easy to push, even on high pile carpet. On low carpet or hard floors, it practically propels itself! I also like having an extra long cord, so I don't have to keep finding new outlets while vacuuming. I have nothing bad to say about this tool.
I've seen these vacuums around for many years, mostly at places like hotels. I always thought they looked cheap, but I was very wrong. This is the best vacuum I've ever owned. Previously I would hit a big box store once every year or two and get another vacuum. I predict that this will last a very long time, and if I ever do wear some part out I can order parts from Amazon. This makes the previous "lightweight" vacuum I was using feel super heavy, this vacuum is very light and very easy to use. The hand grip is very comfortable.
Some things to be aware of:
- There are no attachments. This is only made to be the very best vacuum for vacuuming the floor. We bought the
Oreck Commercial BB900DGR XL to have the best vacuum that does attachments.
- There is no height adjustment: It doesn't need one. Our previous vacuum height adjuster got worn down and wouldn't do the rug properly anymore. This vacuum does every carpet and rug we have without needing to adjust anything, and does a better job than any previous vacuum we tried.
- It doesn't have a reusable canister, instead it uses bags. I was excited when I got my first canister vacuum years ago. Now I am excited to be done with canister vacuums and having their dust poof out into my face every time it needs to be emptied. Bags are the way to go for me, and I got plenty with this vacuum to last a long time before I need to order more.
There's a reason why bag vacs are still around amidst the hype about dysons - BECAUSE THEY WORK. They work flawlessly.
We are a household of 6 cats and a dog - dysons or other bagless vacs just don't work. No matter what you do, the bagless vacs retain dirt and odor with all the nooks and crannies of their cyclone technology and hidden filters.
Bag vacs are simple. The bag fills up, you toss it out along with all the odor and dust.
As it relates to this Oreck, it's been our fav vac ever. It's much lighter than the sharks and dysons and of course it's way more effective. Drop a deodorant tablet in the bag and it really works wonders. It's seriously the cleanest and lightest vac I've ever used. Save your money on the dysons. Get an oreck.
My wife recently bought me this Oreck as a gift after listening to me complain for months about my hatred of our Dyson DC 24.
We got the Dyson maybe 5 years ago, thinking it would be the last vacuum cleaner we'd ever have to buy. That was a very expensive mistake.
A Dyson is made up of about 8 million fiddly, cheap plastic parts. It requires a lot of maintenance. Simply emptying the bin after each use is not enough. I regularly had to take the bin apart and clean it because dust would clog up the air intake holes, and this would drastically reduce the suction power. The washable filter would never rinse clean, even when washes with a high pressure water hose, and I'd have to wait 2 days for it to dry before I could vacuum again. The power cord was short, build quality was poor, and things were always going wrong. The main problem with my Dyson, though, was it just wasn't a powerful vacuum cleaner by any stretch of the imagination.
This Oreck is definitely the most powerful vacuum cleaner I've ever used. The word "commercial" on the front of the bag isn't a joke. I've worked as a janitor, and used one of those super heavy duty backpack vacuums. This Oreck is every bit as good, and a lot easier on my back. You'll be surprised when the box arrives, because it's so lightweight. You can pick the thing up with one finger. Although it's light, the construction is as sturdy as can be. I'm willing to bet I'll be using my Oreck 10 years from now. It performs spectacularly on carpet, wood floors, and tile. I'll put it this way: anything you don't want sucked into your Oreck had better be picked up off the floor. We just moved into our current place 3 months ago, and it had brand new carpet at the time. After the first time I used the Oreck, the carpet looked and felt brand new again. It really gets the deep down dirt and thoroughly brushes every fiber of the carpet. I'm enjoying walking around barefooted again.
A Dyson may look very cool and have a lot of kit, but it doesn't come anywhere close to matching the performance and build quality of the Oreck. They do still build some things like they used to.
Just FYI: there is a limited warranty with this vacuum, but the owners manual says you have to purchase directly from an Oreck dealer to get it. Honestly, I don't think I'll need it.
