My wife does a lot of quilting and English paper piecing (still not exactly sure what the difference is). She mentioned wanting a travel iron and a tabletop pad thing to use at her work table. Being a bit of an iron snob myself, I was happy to find that Rowena made one. After reading a lot of somewhat dissapointing reviews about the iron crapping out, overheating, breaking, etc. I told my wife that this iron may not be cut out for regular day-to-day use. She has been using this travel iron for crafty lady projects for a year now & it gets used a lot! Almost everyday. I am happy to admit that I was wrong. It's been a great iron for what she needed it for. She LOVES this thing. I should probably buy another one and just hide it away in case they get discontinued or something. She is that happy with it.
I needed a smaller iron to keep downstairs where I sew and first bought a tiny one that is hard to grasp with my arthritic fingers. Then I dropped it the first day and broke off one of the little legs that allow it to stand. I did more research and came across this Rowenta Travel-Ready iron, which folds up and comes with a travel pouch. It's perfect for the small seams I sew when I quilt and its narrow profile is great for getting into corners. I like it so much better than the larger iron in my laundry room, I might just use it for all ironing from now on.
Working just perfect as it should. I have found out that many of the bad reviews are due to a miss information regarding the functionality of the product... Just read the tiny manual that comes with the iron and you are going to love it If the handle leaks it has too much water. Everytime you try to fold the handle just remember it has a big purple "PUSH" labelled button on the bottom to allow the folding action. Otherwise indeed it's going to break. Enjoy your new mini iron.
I bought this iron as it was highly recommended by Sharon Schamber for a class of hers I recently attended. She recommended it by brand name and model as the only one she has found that gets hot enough to work well with the appliqué technique she taught us. It is very easy to use. It is small and light so it is easy to take to class, and to use on large and small pieces of fabric. Just a gem.
The Rowenta Travel-Ready Iron is great for travel. It is light weight. The arm can easily be raised and the lowered with the press of a button. The travel pouch helps when stowing it. The voltage can be toggled between 120 and 240, depending on where you are in the world. It comes with a US plug, so you will need to purchase an adapter for locations without US electrical outlets. This iron produces plenty of steam, so the small reservoir will need to be refilled after ironing each garment. You may have to go over your garments more than you would with the standard size Rowenta iron, due to lack of weight. The steam can be adjusted and turned on or off. Overall, this is a great travel iron.

Description
The DA1560 is a compact iron with all the benefits of a full sized Rowenta. Powerful steam is generated at a constant rate for optimal efficiency with a burst of steam button to remove tough wrinkles. The microsteam stainless steel soleplate has a precision tip for reaching narrow edges, seams and collars. The compact iron has a full range thermostat for use on all fabric types, and vertical steam capability to remove wrinkles in hanging garments. A transparent tank holds over 2-ounce of regular tap water, and the handle folds flat for storage. Ideal for travel, a dual voltage switch ensures that the iron is powerful at 120 or 230-volt. Travel pouch included.
Works great, upright steam is appreciated on my wrinkled suit. I also travel overseas so the 110 to 220 at the flip of a switch is appreciated.
April 1, 2014 update.
It still works great and it's been to Lithuania, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, various U.S. states in checked baggage (canvas wheeled bag)... and no issues. Perhaps the complaints about it breaking must be due to mishandling? You just need to pack it in the center of your bag and surround it with clothes. I have totally ditched using hotel irons. They take forever, leave marks, and can't knock the wrinkles out of my suit.
December 1, 2105 Update.
This iron is still going strong. Just went to Europe and Asia again and it's traveled another 200,000 miles since my last review. I pack it in my canvas luggage on it's side buffered my clothing on all sides. I use it to iron, of course, but use the vertical steam feature for my suits and ties when I arrive.
15 June, 2017 Update!
This iron has now been in Europe, Asia, South America, North America, and traveled hundreds of thousands of miles sine my first review. The iron still works great and I take it on every trip. It's much better than any iron a hotel gives you, and you are always assured to have one. I like using it as a steamer, too, to take the wrinkles out of my suits and ties after traveling. I travel using a soft sided bag, so I always pack it in the middle of the case on it's side. Thanks Rowenta.
30 August 2017 Update.
My iron finally bit the dust after hundreds of thousands of travel miles. It didn't break, it just stopped working. So I ordered another one today. This iron works better than anything you will find in a hotel, plus the vertical steam knocks the wrinkles out of my suits.
October 2018
This one developed a leak after four trips and after one year. That’s too bad, but will buy another. I can’t find anything better.
This little light weight iron is the Best! 200 holes of steamed awesomeness. I use this iron every single day on fabric while making charity quilts. When I first get a new one I make sure it works perfectly. If not, I would request a new one, which I have only had to do once. Possibly twice. Which is nothing compared to how many I have owned. The only reason I have purchased so many is because of using it every day, I have bumped the ironing board and it has fallen on my tile floor. Sometimes it lives through the fall, but occasionally it does not. I will always own 1 or 2 as long as they are on the market.
I like how it folds up and goes right into a fabric woven case they provide. This iron does work. You can set it at 240 volts or 120 volts. I tend to stick with using Rowenta. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because 1. I was ironing something that should not come into contact with moisture. The steam button was switched off. The iron was on the highest setting, and the item I was trying to iron got steamed and it shrank before my eyes. I thought that could not happen unless I had the steam button turned on. So I guess next time I should remove all the water and let it completely dry out. Idk. The instructions read: "Your iron will only produce steam when the control is set within the coloured zone and the steam switch is in the on position." And 2. There are 22 safety instructions in the manual. The one that bothered me was number 21. It reads: "Travel iron, is not intended for regular use." I'm not exactly sure what that all entails. Should I just use it once a week? Month?
After researching many brands I decided on Rowenta--
I travel ALOT (between the high fees and frequent ''LOST' luggage) I refuse to travel with more than a carry-on. I pack using vacuum bags which gives me space--and wrinkles.
I wanted a small iron that could EFFICIENTLY steam out the creases in my outfits. The Rowenta did not disappoint--I am more than satisfied.
For starters, its small and lightweight (takes less space than my sz.7 Shoe) Its narrow point will reach pockets, collar, etc., and when used as an upright steamer--it's phenominal! The plate has 300 holes for steam (how many do those other travel irons that I researched have? Four.)
This iron uses Tap Water; a HUGE Plus since liquids are prohibited on airlines... (it's not easy finding distilled water in a foreign land)
And honestly? It has become my Go-To device when I' m at home now, as well.
This is a nice sized petite iron. It has a comfortable handle and it gets super hot super fast. The only negatives so far that i have are as follows - i do not care for the location of the cord it looks like its soft and can swivel easily but its just a bit clunky for my taste. Im sure that on a regular sized iron it really wouldn't be an issue - the other thing i dont care for is there is no automatic shut off. All my other Rowena's have had that feature so now im a bit tripped up in having to remember to unplug that bad boy. Its a very good iron so far
