I was very reluctant paying $40 for a plastic trash can, but with the impeccable reviews, I knew I was making a good decision. I've had mine for one month now and it's been great. The step to open the lid is as reliable as it was the first day I used it and the lid closes super quietly. It's a perfect trash can for those who live in a small space. The Glad tall kitchen bags (13 gallon) fit this trash can perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.
I have a Siberian Husky and an Australian Shepherd who are major DUMPSTER DIVERS! Every time I came home, they would get into any kind of trash. I haven’t had a trash can inside in probably a YEAR! I finally searched for a locking trash can and found this one. So far my dogs have knocked it over and scratched at it and we’re unsuccessful at getting any garbage out! BEST INVESTMENT EVER. So many of my friends with dogs are asking me where I got this from. And a few of them have already ordered after seeing mine work the way it has. I definitely recommend this!!
Good can until it breaks. Ours lasted 4 years. The hinge on the back is made of plastic and wears away over time. When the slot gets too big, the lid falls off whenever you try to open it. I don't see an obvious way to repair it. 3 stars.
Edit: SimpleHuman replaced the lid under warranty. Easy and fast! Upgraded to 4 stars.
If you've ever used a steel trashcan, which are usually heavy at the base, you'll be used to step-open trashcans staying completely in place when you step on them. This is plastic, so it's much lighter than steel. This means that when the trashcan is relatively empty, it'll move around quite a bit when you step on it. This can be annoying because you then have to position it back into place, and it just feels cheap when your trash can moves around when you step on it, no matter how high-quality the can.
No worries, however. You can buy a gallon of distilled water for less than a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store and place it in the bottom of the trash can to weigh it down. Then, no matter how aggressively you step, it'll stay completely in place, and your Trash Can Experience will have been elevated from Mildly Irritating to Extremely Pleasurable.
Don't worry, there will still be plenty of room once you add your gallon of distilled water; I use standard kitchen trash bags and the bottom of one of these bags rests just above the gallon of distilled water. Obviously, you don't pour the water into the can; just place the unopened gallon on its side in the bottom of the can.
This trash can is High Quality and Highly Affordable. The lack of weight in the base is it's Achilles Heel, but if you employ this Powerful Distilled Water Trick for less than a buck, this baby will sing every time you open its mouth.
As a bonus, if there's ever a natural disaster or some other doomsday scenario, you've taken your first step to prepping your survival stash ;)
Happy Canning!
Truth be told, what I truly desire in the deepest corner of my heart is SimpleHuman's stainless steel butterfly step trash can, but I just could not justify (to my bank account) spending $160 on a trash can. Alas, I went with the plastic slim step-child, and although it lacks the diva flair of the butterfly, it's a sturdy little workhorse that provides maximum capacity in a very slim size. I have a galley kitchen with a narrow floor to ceiling window at one end in lieu of a wall. It provides nice lighting but isn't a good place for the garbage can, so I needed something that can fit under a sink cabinet or sit against the end of the counters and still be narrow enough not to block the entry way too much. This garbage can fits the bill nicely. The stepping mechanism feels sturdy even when the can is empty, with no wobble to it, and the top stays open if you lift it up by hand to 90 degrees, which is nice when I'm dumping scraps off of the counter into the can. The mouth of it is fairly wide and square, so larger items are easily disposed (fits gallon milk containers easily). It shuts slowly and quietly, no splattering, and seals nicely. The wheels make it easy to move it around. Locking feature is a nice touch to deter small children and pets from getting into the trash. I use regular trash liners (Glad ForceFlex Tall Kitchen 13 Gallon Trash Bag with drawstrings) rather than the SimpleHuman specific ones, and the drawstring part stretches just enough to slip over the lip of the can and the bag fits very snugly around the rim so that you don't get debris accidentally falling outside of the trash bag.
I imagine this little workhorse will remain in our kitchen for a long time, even if we move to a bigger place. Unless I win the lottery and can afford the stainless steel butterfly step can.

Lock the Lid Shut
This waste bin also has a slide lock that locks the lid shut to keep it secure – and harder for dogs, cats, other pets and curious children to get into.
I'm the Strong and Silent Type
The strong steel pedal means the can is hands-free and is designed to last 150,000 steps — that's more than 20 steps a day for 20 years, and simplehuman's patented lid shox technology ensures that the lid closes softly in a smooth, quiet manner.
Custom Fit Trash Can Liners
simplehuman Code K trash can liners are a perfect fit for this trash can. They are made from extra-durable plastic with thick double seams to prevent rips and tears and have been rated among the top in strength comparable to other major brands. Extra strong to keep garbage in the bag — not on the floor or the bottom of your trash can.
Overall: It's a good quality, well made trash can.
Made of durable plastic with a sleek design; this trash can is a great product. I especially appreciate the locking lid design that holds up to a growing toddler! It has good foot pedal mechanism. Give it a light tap and it opens and softly closes giving you enough time to toss something in and keep going. Hold down the foot pedal and it will stay open until you manually shut it. I've read other reviews that said that the lid after a while just pops off the mechanism and the foot pedal stops working, this is not the case for us. We haven't had any problems with the lid detaching, and I have checked out the area when it attaches and the plastic and metal rod seem very solid. I am not worried and I think that might be a flaw that occurred in the manufacturing that has since been resolved. I also love that it streamlined to fit into small spaces and just an overall great size for the kitchen.
My only complaint is that the wheels have no stoppers. This is actually a bit frustrating when little hands try to push the can around the kitchen like it's a toy. Even with the wheels held in place the trash can glides very easily around the floor. Often, during normal opening and closing use, the can "migrates" backwards to the wall. When it gets pushed back it starts to scuff the walls (probably because we have cheap paint). But of all the problems we could have I would say this is fairly minor. My husband has said he will buy some non-slip type material and somehow attach it to the bottom of the can.
Other than tweaking the wheels (or removing them all together) we are very happy with using this trash can. In fact we essetually have two because our recycling can is the same Simple Human can just in blue.

I got this can to replace my simplehuman stainless steel one I have had for about 8 years. Nothing wrong with my old can except it is too small for my household needs and a small pain to change bags. So I went bigger with this one which was way over due. I have to say I expected the gray to be a bit darker. And look a bit nicer. I saw a gray one same brand, different model at Lowes, and the finish was nicer and color darker. So I ordered this one, especially since the photo looked darker, and was a bit let down. Maybe should have gone with the black to match my stove and dishwasher.
Easy assembly with only the lid to attach. I read others that said it was horrible, but only took me about 5 minutes. Trick is to pull the lever up and put the lid on the lever first, then apply hard direct pressure to each attachement bar seperately. You really got push hard and directly over the bar. And once it snaps in, you are done!
I am hoping this one holds up as well as my last simplehuman one.
UPDATE****
The handles finish is coming off fast. Very disappointing bc it looks horrible.. won’t purchase again
I recently had a water filter installed on my kitchen sink which necessitates having the water tank under my sink where my trashcan used to be. I needed to buy a trashcan with a cover because it now needs to sit somewhere in my kitchen and this one looked pretty good. I really like this trashcan not only because it has a cover, but because it fits into a small space and holds a lot of trash. I use the 13 gallon Hefty trash bags and because they need to stretch across the top it's always a nice snug fit and the bag doesn't fall into the can. One of the better purchases I've made in a long time.
If you buy this retail it comes preassembled, but thankfully another reviewer described how to put it together...so I followed his directions with one modification...you have to attach the lid...first put the foot peddle metal attacher through the center hole in the lid...then turn upside down at an angle (about 40 degrees) and snap in each side separately until you hear the snap...it does require a little muscle...I gave it a 4 star because I felt for the price you pay the lid should come attached...once you put it together right, it's pretty much as described. I hope this helps.
So I previously got the great idea to teach my Plott Hound mixed breed dog how to sniff things out. Matter of fact he has gotten so good that we play hide and seek in the house with treats and he can find anything by smell! However... the side effect of teaching him to be efficient with his nose is now he enjoys popping his head in the trash to grab stuff. He doesn't eat it, he just throws it all across the living room floor like a show and tell display for me to come home to.
Just like you can't make a horse drink water you can't make a scent hound not smell so this was my cure all. It is made of pretty heavy-duty plastic. It is made well to the point where I don't see it breaking any time soon (I guess that is why they give you a warranty on it). The locking lid works fantastic. The lock itself actually takes a good amount of effort to open and close. I usually just slap it in to place when I leave but to unlock it when I get home I have to give it a good whack at the right angle to give it enough force to unlock. For some people it may be too hard but I personally prefer it so as to have peace of mind for when I leave for work. The lid has a thing that slows itself when closing so you don't really hear banging but it doesn't really catch/work unless the lid went almost all the way up. Step is very wide and works well also but I don't personally use it very often.
