I have a common condition in older folks called "dry eye." Tears are produced just fine, but the glands that add a little fat to the tears become less efficient over time, and it is this fat that makes the tears protective and last longer. If you are constantly wiping away tears and you are not crying, or if you feel as if you have some foreign object in your eyes constantly - but can never find anything - you probably have "dry eye." Ordinary "artificial tears" do not have the lubricant in them, and so are of little help. In fact, if you use them a lot, you may be washing out some of what lubricant your own eyes actually produce.
If your eyes feel scratchy and very dry, use a washcloth and very warm water as a compress first, then carefully wipe away any crusting or old tears, and apply a drop to the center of each eye. Blink this for a while and don't wipe your eyes again just then. In the beginning I needed to do this at least twice a day, but now normally only once. Re-apply the drops if you take a shower or use conventional drops to remove a foreign object or hair.
I used to feel always as if I had "something in my eye," and it was even hard to focus at times. Now I seldom feel the effects of dry eye, and know instantly what needs to be done if I do.
Prior to my cataract surgery, I found Refresh fantastic for relieving tired eyes in the morning. Now, several months after cataract surgery -- which went pretty well - I find that Refresh INITIALLY feels refreshing to my eyes but leaves my eyes feeling irritated after several minutes, and the effect lasts for hours.
Bottom line: Pay attention to not just the initial reaction of your eyes but how you feel later in the hour. Is there a short term positive effect followed by some kind of rebound effect?
I have dry eye syndrome and had been bothering me a lot. Started using Refresh Tears eye drops then switched to Refresh Optive. Much better results with Optive. If mild dry eyes, Tears are probably enough but with mine, Optive is working really well. I might try the Refresh with Omega.
Started using after cataract surgery last November, and will continue. Was one of the brands recommended by the surgeon. I find it very soothing.
My optometrist gave a sample of Systane and said it was the supposed be the latest and great with a shrug as to say "I don't know". It burned like crazy and didn't last very long. Refresh is soothing and lasts. Good stuff and a great deal on Amazon. My local pharm wanted 20 plus for one bottle, I got 2 for 15.

OPTIVE LUBRICANT EYE DROPS Size: 2X15 ML
recommended by my eye doctor but cost twice the price in the store so i'm happy to find it on amazon. delivery was speedy and item is exactly as described. this is the refresh OPTIVE, not refresh TEARS. this has 2 ingredients and i really do feel the difference, i need less drops and less frequently for my dry eyes to be comfortable than when i use other brand eye drops.HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I just opened up The Pharmpack 2 Days Ago, after buying and finishing A STORE Brand. Never Again!!! MY EYES Have Been THANKING Me Since I SWITCHED BACK To REFRESH OPTIVE, They Haven't Been Dry Since I Used REFRESH & The 2 Pack Is A Real Bargain.
best optive lubricant I've ever used. my opthamalogist gave me some samples to try, they worked great so I figured I'd buy some full size bottles of refresh eye drops. thanks for wonderful product!
Item works well, just what the Doctor ordered. I like the bottles much better than the small veils, less waste. Convienient mailing for it, I could not find it my area in stores, all sold out.
My eye doctor recommended using this daily after I had eye surgery two years ago. Have used it consistently. It helps with eye irritation and dryness. After working in the yard, it is especially importation to 'wash' the eyes with Refresh Optive Lubricant Eye Drops. I have been very satisfied with this brand.
