Etekcity Digital Body Weight Bathroom Scale with Step-On Technology, 400 Pounds, Body Tape Measure Included, Elegant Black

Received this on Wednesday. It worked for two days, then the display faded lighter and lighter and now it's Sunday (the 4th day of use, ever), there is no display other than a blue background. Tried new batteries. Tried different surface. Tried everything. Doesn't work. So, it's a completely useless paperweight. We are returning it. What a waste.

Update:
The seller immediately refunded our money and sent us a new scale free of charge. The new scale works great. It looks like the LED crystals were probably damaged in shipping, which isn't the seller's fault. Glad to see that this seller cares about the end customer experience at any cost.

We have been using this Etekcity digital scale for a year now in our our home are very pleased with the scale so far. We had purchased this scale to replace our previous Sunbeam manual , Spring loaded bathroom scale which was horribly inaccurate and deliberated for a considerable amount of time between this scale and the FitBit Aria smart scale . In the end because of the huge price difference and very positive reviews on this scale made us go with this one

Design, Construction & Build
-------------------------------------
- The scale is feels heavy for its size mainly due to the thick, monolithic glass sheet stepping surface of the scale
- All our fears or cracked or broken glass due to stepping on it frequently, bumping or dropping it were unfounded in the past year ( we did all of them !) , so its definitely sturdy and well built
- The two tone black-sliver finish on the scale looks ultra modern and chic
- The digital readouts are large and backlit in a pleasant not-too-strong blue which is visible both in light and complete darkness. I often check my weight on the scale during midnight bathroom visits.

Long Term Accuracy
---------------------------
- When we initially purchased this scale i used a 10 lb Rice bag to measure its accuracy and it was always within 0.2 lb of 10 lb with repeated tests, which is very accurate for a digital scale and well suited for measuring body weight
- Another pointer to the accuracy of this scale is that the weight that we got for our toddler son from his pediatrician using a professional balance scale matches the results we got from this scale

I tried the same accuracy test today after a whole year of use & abuse:
10 lb Basmati Rice Bag : Scale Measured = 10.4 lb
6lb Dumbbells : Scale Measured = 5.8 lb

As you can see that even after one year the scale is fairly accurate , for all I know it might be 100% accurate as well as I have no way of certifying that the 10lb rice bag or the dumbbells are infact their true stated weights.

Battery Life
----------------
- The scale is still using the two original AAA that came with the package even after a year of frequent, daily use so I'd say its great!

Cons
----------
- About the only con about this scale is that the glass surface, being glass, needs frequent cleaning as it shows water stains. we usually wipe it with a damp cloth once every week so its not too bad. If you are going worry about keeping it spotless always then you'll going to have a hard time :)

Overall we are very pleased with our purchase and couple of our family friends have also purchased it after seeing it in our home and can highly recommend this scale if your are looking for a good looking , inexpensive and accurate digital scale.

This depression piece of equipment has neither Mercy not Remorse. Empathy nor Conscience. Love not Regret. It will take days of heart felt best efforts and reminds how you constantly cheat on your diet. It will haunt your very soul offering to relieve your guilty but will continually betraying your best hopes. It will ever give your spouse ever increasing reasons to give you blander and leaner food. It will replace the once mounds of bacon and douhnuts with carrots and carrots and even more carrots. All with fall before it's ever growing power and reign and nothing nothing will be able to stop it....

Kids like it though, had a pretty led back light.

I have been using this scale since the beginning of the year. So far it has managed to weigh with an accuracy of up to +/- 0.02 lbs which is more than acceptable for a simple body weight scale. Its auto on/auto off feature has been quite convenient. Since Etekcity reached out to me and asked me to do a review, I decided to break out official Department of Weights and Measures certified weights and placed thirty pounds on the scale. To little surprise, it weighed precisely thirty pounds. For the price, it cannot be beat.

For the love of God, please do not be silly like another reviewer on here and have this scale half on carpet and half on hard surface. On second thought, don't do that with any scale. If it doesn't break the scale, it will surely wear out (and destroy) the load cell inside any scale.

After returning the defective scale I was contacted by the company with an offer to replace the item. I did receive a new scale and it works exactly as it should. I will say that the customer service for the company is great- the followed through to make sure I got the scale and that it worked.

I was excited to get this highly-rated scale to replace the one I’ve had for 15 years. It looked great out of the box, but that’s the only compliment I can give. At first, I couldn’t get it to calibrate to zero. I had to tap it hard enough to get the scale to come on at which point it registered the weight of the press rather than resetting to zero. I took the batteries out and but them in which seems to be the equivalent of restarting a computer. At first I thought I had solved the problem, so I proceeded to weigh myself multiple times without moving the scale. None of the weights were the same. I tried with another person, same results. I tried a 5 pound bag of flour and got an error message. I tried forcing a calibration and still had the same results. Too many problems right out of the box. Now I have to figure out how to mail it back when all I have is the absurdly oversized box Amazon shipped it in.

The scale was great while it lasted. Unfortunately, it died after only a year and seven months. Changed the batteries after they died and the scale never worked after that. Customer service suggested I remove batteries and wait 45 seconds before re-installing to perhaps reset the scale. This didn't work.
UPDATE; I received an email from customer service requesting my correct address as they wanted to send me a replacement scale even though mine warranty had expired. WHAT GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! How many companies stand up to their product and care about what their customers say?!. I just received my new scale today.

I am generally pleased with my new Etekcity Digital Body Weight Bathroom Scale, which is visually appealing, seems to be reasonably accurate and was delivered in a reasonably timely way at a good price.

Even so, I want to call attention to two issues with respect to precision and accuracy which others may want to bear in mind.

First, this particular scale gives readings to the tenth of a pound, however, these readings seem to be ROUNDED to the nearest EVEN numbered tenth of a pound (e.g. fifth of a pound): n.0, n.2, n.4, n.6 and n.8. ODD numbered tenths will never appear. For most purposes, this is just fine. But it is helpful to understand this limitation so that one is not misled.

Second, the scale seems to REMEMBER the prior weight and for the purposes of CONSISTENCY represents the PRIOR WEIGHT when a very similar weight is placed on the scale. That is to say that the weight readout is DELIBERATELY STICKY and continues to present the OLD weight until some threshold difference is exceeded. I haven't sought to determine the threshold used. This is NOT particularly intuitive.

I do NOT believe that this is either an accident OR a bug, but rather is a feature purposefully introduced by the manufacturer. I probably wouldn't have noticed this EXCEPT that more than twenty-five years ago I recall reading a business case involving electronic scales and CONSISTENCY ISSUES were discussed in that case. The solution to the consistency problem was to PROGRAM the electronic scale to give the PRIOR RESULT unless some threshold difference is exceeded.

Now you might just think that I am paranoid, but I have done repeated tests of this new scale, standing on the scale after doing things that would tend to cause a slight change in weight (like eating or drinking a small portion). When I weigh myself again, the WEIGHT IS THE SAME as the prior measurement. But if I take the battery out of the scale and reweigh myself, I get a different result consistent with the ingestion of additional food or drink, etc. So I am reasonably confident that the described phenomenon is REAL.

It is a bit of a hassle to stop and remove and replace the battery to get a true and correct reading, but I have been doing this at the outset of a new diet to get some sense of weight changes during the day rather than merely day to day changes in weight. Within another week or so, I will probably get bored with taking multiple readings within a single day. But in my view, deliberately giving the user an INCORRECT WEIGHT in the interests of producing CONSISTENCY is a feature that OUGHT NOT BE INCLUDED in a scale OR, at a minimum, there ought to be a very simple means of resetting the scale without the necessity of picking it up and removing the battery.

I might add that I suspect that this undocumented "feature" is probably purposefully programmed into MANY electronic scales, as the discussion I recall from the decades old business case indicated that this was done to overcome consumer resistance to a scale which correctly gave different readings when the consumer stood on the scale multiple times (even with no change in actual weight). That is, scales are subject to measurement errors and these are being filtered out by LYING to the consumer about the detected weight. So instead of getting some variance in result due to measurement error, the scale is producing a LESS ACCURATE and RELIABLE result in the interests of overcoming customer resistance in accepting the truth.

Since this logic is probably now programmed into a wide variety of scales, this isn't really a reason to buy or not buy this particular scale.

Despite all this, I am still satisfied, but it seems to me that a market exists for HONEST scales! ;)

Once you get the scale set up, all you have to do is stand on it, and it will turn on automatically and tell you your weight. It's a very nice, basic, easy to use scale. The screen is easy to read, it's sturdy despite how slim and flat it is, and it's consistent and accurate. If it gets moved or shifted, re-calibrating it is simple. However, the directions say that it shouldn't be stood or sat on for long periods of time when not in use. I think it affects the calibration if you do that, so I've had to cover it with a wooden box to keep my cats from sitting on it. They're very curious about it! It might be a good idea if you have small children or pets to keep it in a shut room, or under something. I've really enjoyed using this scale, and it will definitely be a great tool for maintaining my ideal weight.

We had a digital bathroom scale made by Health O Meter that finally gave up the biscuit. When it did work, in order to use it, you had to tap it to get it to calibrate, then show zero, then step on it to get your weight. It was a plastic bodied scale, not very attractive, and a pain to use. And we thought that’s just the way it had to be.

So imagine our surprise when this scale showed up and we unpackaged it and used it for the first time. First off, it’s a beautiful scale (as far as scales can be beautiful). My wife is pretty particular about things in the house, and I ordered this one on my own. She is very pleased with the appearance. It’s a sleek, glass-topped scale with a two-tone color. The numbers light up with a nice blue LED background.

As far as ease of use, you can’t get any better here. Just step on the scale and it works. No tapping, no calibrating, nothing. Just the way a scale should work.

Lastly, for those reviews that reference it being slippery when wet.....uh.....in my experience, anytime you mix WATER with ELECTRONICS, nothing good happens. Just wait til you’re dry before you put your feet on glass....scale aside. And wait til you’re dry before messing with electronics. Common sense. Oh, and it comes with a warning label...”Slippery when wet”...so there’s that. Lol

I did some tests with weights and the scale is dead on, plus or minus 2/10...plenty accurate enough for body weight. Over repeated checks, the scale has remained consistent.

This is a great looking scale that is easy to use and accurate. We love it!

I purchased this scale to replace a traditional analog dial scale in our bathroom. While our old scale was accurate and reliable, the dial was very small and hard to read, even in good lighting. The Etekcity scale weighs us nearly exactly the same as our old scale and is very easy to read.

Years ago I owned a digital scale that suffered from the "memory" effect - this is where the scale remembers it's most recent measurement and if the next measurement only differs by a small amount, then it will repeat the original measurement rather than read out the new one. I've read that this is by design with cheap digital scales to hide their inaccuracy. So far the EtekCity scale does not suffer from the memory effect at all. I've tested by weighing myself once, and then again while holding a very light object such as a cell phone. In my case this increased the second reading by 0.4 pounds.

Overall a great and simple scale, especially considering the price!
