just had several days of 90+ temps, and this AC kept us nice and cool
Got mine yesterday. Installed like any other window unit. Turned it on and heard the dreaded machine gun sound that others have been discussing. This was in my master bedroom so my wife and I couldn't sleep with it and ended up turning it off.
Today, I took it apart to see if something was loose. Everything looked fine and the fan blades appeared to clear their surroundings. With the unit out of the window, it sounded great! No rattle! I thought that simply taking the cover off and putting it back on might have fixed the issue, but I was wrong. I put it back in the window sill and it starting making that sound again! Arrrgh!
So why did the sound go away when I had it out and sitting on an ottoman? Hmmm...
I went outside with my wife inside and starting pushing on the underside to see if the noise went away. Keep in mind that you can't hear the noise, at least on mine, from the outside. When I applied a little pressure directly underneath, the sound stopped completely. Removing the pressure and it came back. So I cut a piece of pressure-treated 2x4 and propped it up underneath. There's even a little groove for it like it was meant to be propped up.
Performance-wise, this baby is awesome! It's also nice and quiet now that I fixed the noise. I can't give it 5 stars because it didn't work well out of the box and, judging by other comments, you may find the same thing. If you bought it and have the same issue, try the board. It might work perfectly!
Small, light A/C unit that works well for smaller windows and rooms. I was able to easily handle installing this into a horizontally-sliding window alone. Low fan speed is very quiet, not a lot of vibration noise compared to A/Cs I've purchased even 5 years ago. Air blows up, not out, so no freezing cold blasts onto your sleeping body while your toes roast. Has energy-saving mode and remote control with digital thermostat, features not typically found at a super low price point. (I purchased this A/C for about $155.)
Energy-saving mode will cause the A/C to turn on and off as it needs to to maintain room temperature. If the temp outside is cooling down to room temperature, or just heating up beyond room temperature, you may find it turning on and off frequently until it settles to either off or running constantly. I've seen this with other units as well and I believe it's just the way the feature works in general. Extra insulation around the unit helps. There's a normal cool mode and fan mode provided as well if you don't like this.
Window fins suck -- they don't actually screw into the A/C, they screw into your window sill so they kind of just flap around when you're trying to install it. The main A/C body doesn't screw into anything, but it's so light (~39 lbs) that I'm not concerned.
Notes on assembly: the screws for the side panels screw in from behind the panels, not the front. If so, swap them left and right.
Fan speed and timer mode settings don't display the current setting, they only show briefly when you change the setting, so if you just want to confirm it then you have to change it, and cycle around until it gets back to the original setting.
It can be set on a timer with a smart outlet, as it will come back up in the same mode setting after outlet power is restored. You could have the timer switch it on an hour before you get home, but you have to know your schedule then. With an external timer or smart plug, it's more flexible.
Measured 41.5 deg outlet temperature with about a 75 deg inlet, so it works pretty well. Decibel readings showed it to be decently quiet, and no unusual noises.
Installed using Insulfoam EPS insulation board from Home Depot, works very well as a waterproof base support to protect the window sill.
Received with a dent in the bottom rear frame, enough to contact the condenser fins, but it's fairly minor compared to the other reports of wholesale damage.
Works much better than the Whynter portable AC unit with 12,000 BTU rating, which doesn't cool as well as this one, and doesn't work to remove humidity. With this LG, humidity was brought down rapidly as it should be. Bonus that it's a third of the price to boot.
Surprisingly quiet - much quieter than the Frigidaire "casement" 12000 BTU model, and even quieter than the supposedly whisper-quiet Haier Sereneity Series 8000 BTU unit it replaced.
Also, very strong cooling capacity.
These strength more than compensate for the flimsy packaging (LG - note - your packaging was clearly not designed for the e-commerce age - unit arrived intact but box didn't survive the journey and arrived open, some of the documentation fell out, tho luckily the A/C itself was not damaged).
Amazon customer service was, as always, great and very responsive (we were worried about the open box).
Overall very happy with the purchase.

With its stylish full-function remote, you can even get your cool on from across the room. LG patented gold fin anti-corrosion coating provides a protective shield so the unit lasts longer. My old bedroom AC was no longer doing its job efficiently, so it was time to get a new one. After extensive research, I decided on the LG 8,000 BTU. I also went with it because I have an LG 10,000 BTU window-mounted unit downstairs in my dining room which I have been really pleased with. Downstairs is an open floor plan, so the dining room opens into the living room and kitchen. The whole downstairs has stayed cool with it on, therefore I figured I'd be happy with an LG up in my bedroom. I have been pleased. My bedroom is 230 square feet and I have used the unit mainly during the night, so it hasn't had to fight intense heat yet, but does a fine job on some of the really hot humid nights this past August. It makes the normal sounds of an AC, so I can't say it's quiet, but it's not loud to the extent that one can't sleep. I've heard units louder than this. One thing I particularly like are the extra side panels that help further block out the outside air. They can be cut and put on the sides of the unit once it is installed (this is in addition to the accordion panels attached to the sides of the unit). Hopefully this will help come winter, since I'll probably leave the unit in the window year round. I'd recommend it.
This thing is super quiet (compared to other window air conditioning units I've had in the past), and SUPER COLD. I live in a 100-year-old farmhouse with not the best insulation, but I have to set the temperature on this thing to 70 degrees or more because it just does such a great job of cooling. BRRRRR! :)
This air conditioner would get 5 stars except for the apparent lack of quality control before shipping. After finally getting the thing in the window on a very hot night, we excitedly turned it on and were met with a horrible sound like a jet engine. This was very depressing after all that work then thinking we would have to wait until the next working day to get support. My husband assertained that the fan blades were hitting the fan shroud. He could see that a screw that attached the shroud to the unit was over tightened. We debated about the possibility that the warranty would become void if we opened the unit and loosened the screw. But we decided the risk was worth getting the thing working. A twist of the screw fixed it and it has been working perfectly since then. So our only complaint is a pretty big one really. We should probably reduce the rating by more than one star. LG has an obligation to see their units leave the factory in working order.
Very cold, a little bit noisy, but what I expected. Installation was easy. Overall, I like it.
Bought this unit for the wifi despite poor reviews of that functionality. I'm glad I did, because I haven't had any problems with it and it's worked fine!
It's pretty simple - I downloaded the LG Smart ThinQ app on my iPhone and followed the instructions. The app connects your phone via wifi to the AC, and then you give the AC the password to connect to your home wifi. That's it, done.
I've had it for almost 2 months now, and only once did the AC disconnect from the wifi. It could have been a wifi or network problem, but all I did was unplug and replug the AC power and it connected again.
I've used the app from work - it tells me the temperature of the room (according to the AC's thermostat) and lets me control all the AC features. My purpose for getting the wifi was 2-fold, one - to control the temp to keep my pets happy, and two - to turn the temp down on hot days a few degrees more to cool the place before I get home.
So far, it's done all that without any problems at all, so thumbs up.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the louvres aren't the best at redirecting airflow. So even though I have the vent tilted all the way up and to the left, air still blows forward. This is common to many AC units, just poor design. Otherwise it's pretty quiet and pretty cold.
Bottom line: good unit, wifi works without problem!
