Years ago I experimented with eating a ketogenic diet to improve some of my health conditions, but unfortunately it didn't have a positive effect. In fact, over time, I actually started to feel worse. I have a poorly understood health condition and one hypothesis is that part of the issue is a defect in the glycolysis pathway (the pathway that results in energy production from carbohydrates). Since I already know that I likely also have a defect in my ketone pathway, rather than attempt a failed experiment again, I decided to supplement with ketone salts directly (since supplementing with pyruvate is impossible). I bought these strips as a way to collect some data about my ketone levels.
I tested my urine while still eating a relatively high level of carbs (before the experiment) to get a baseline. The strips showed a nonexistent level of ketones. The next day, on an empty stomach, I consumed ketone salts, followed by a keto lunch, snack and dinner. The afternoon and evening test strips showed moderate levels of ketones. The next two days I continued this protocol and the strips showed either a small (the third square) or a moderate (fourth square) level of ketones in my urine. After stopping the experiment and reverting to my regular diet, the levels slowly diminished, showing either trace or negative levels of ketones.
My results on these strips were always consistent with the type of diet I was consuming (keto vs. carb). Therefore, I believe these strips work exactly as they are supposed to. If you have any questions, I'm happy to help. If you found this review helpful, please consider leaving me feedback.
I did tested the accuracy of this ketone strips for a couple of weeks, I measured the ketone level in my blood as well in the same time. Most of the time, I would say, in 90%, the ketone strips from Nurse Hatty were accurate.
I have been keto for the last couple months and people keep telling me about the false positives that you will get. I have to say, I have a blood meter as well and these sticks are very accurate. When I have carbs, they go to no trace and when I don't have carbs - they are purple. I test along side the blood meter and have yet to see them say different things. I still like to do the blood meter even though it's more expensive but I only do it once a week as to where these are great to do several times a day. I have been dehydrated and had carbs and guess what - NO FALSE read! True to it's label, it shows no trace. I love these and for the price, it's an awesome way to make sure you are on track. They work!!! It’s pretty simple. I test a few times a day to see what my body is doing in correspondence to my food intake. I’ve gotten kick out of ketosis once because I pushed my carb limit during my 7th week (which was last week) of Keto and Intermittent Fasting... ok, maybe not necessarily “kicked out” of ketosis, but I wasn’t producing enough ketones to show a darker burgundy - which was a reading I was able to get the majority of the time since I’ve changed my lifestyle.
Are these strips accurate?!? Who knows?!? But what you do see are trends when managing your macros. The strips give you a baseline to work off of. What’s even better, is seeing the weight drop.
So all in all, they’re cheap and I feel they’ve contributed to my success with Keto + IF.

I decided to try out a vegetarian ketogenic diet & despite reading that ketone strips aren't an accurate way to measure ketones, for the affordable price I figured, what the hey, and decided to have some fun with my new dietary adventure. These strips are really great when you first start keto to get verification on if ketones are being produced and learning what may knock you out of ketosis. From what I've read, the most accurate way to measure ketone levels is by blood because as your body becomes more efficient at using ketones, less are passed through urine; as well urine readings may be skewed by hydration levels. Nonetheless, these serve a good purpose for a yes/no on ketone production and I'd recommend them for anyone curious if they're in ketosis.
This my first time ever purchasing any so can't really compare them to any others. I went with this one because of the reviews and the quantity for the money. I'm on a Keto diet and I'm a little compulsive with checking so the extra quantity is really nice. My mom is also on a Keto diet so I also ordered her some through her Amazon account after I tested them out for a few weeks. No trouble differentiating between the colors most of the time. Sometimes it's a little tough but not enough to make it less than 5 stars. The bottle says to make sure not to store in your bathroom, which I didn't for the first few weeks. I did start to leave them on top of my toilet but haven't had an issue. The toilet in my bathroom is enclosed by another door and I keep that door pretty much closed so my dog won't get into the waste basket. I also always shower with the main bathroom door open so the steam from the shower doesn't really get trapped in my bathroom. I was keeping them on my nightstand but this was a little unsightly so I now keep them in the toilet room after realizing they haven't gone bad after doing so.
I bought these over a year ago to check my ketones when I fasted. They worked fine. Over a 3 day fast, it tracked a progressive increase in ketones, as expected. I didn't fast for over a year, and finally did another fast about a week ago. And they didn't work at all. I think once opened, they eventually lose their effectiveness. So, I'm not complaining. I recently ordered a different brand, and the new sticks state a longer shelf life if the bottle is un-opened. But only a 3 months shelf life after opening. So I think it might be something to think about, that these sticks may not all be effective after a certain time. In which case, I think you have to weigh the necessity of getting 50 free sticks in a bottle. I didn't need 50 free sticks for my own use.
These ketone strips are very high-quality. My husband and I had another brand that may have been getting old, and that other brand seemed inaccurate; we were never confident of whether we were in a state of ketosis or not. But once we used Nurse Hatty's ketone strips, we could see the difference. The results showed up very quickly and clearly. Also, the color guide (I don't know what to call it...where you match up your result to the percentage of ketosis that your body is in), printed on the side of the container, is large, and easy to read. The strips are longer than the other brand too.The product arrived very quickly, also. I highly recommend this product.
These do exactly what they say. Very useful for those on ketogenic diets, though it can be useful for medical reasons as well (for example, in diabetic patients).
I have not cross-verified the accuracy of these strips (meaning, I have not bought other ketone strips or tried breath or blood testing at the same time as using these strips) so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the strips. However, when I consider the food I've been eating and my activity level, the results on the strips have generally made sense whenever I've tested.
I wanted to add that the folks at Nurse Hatty have some very strong customer service skills. I feel like they would do what it takes to make sure buyers have a good experience, which is comforting.
