Review for ThermoPro TP55 Digital Hygrometer Indoor Thermometer Humidity Gauge with Jumbo Touchscreen and Backlight Temperature Humidity Monitor.
I like this thing alot. It's big and the temp/humidity readings are easy to read, even from a distance. A quick touch of the panel illuminates the screen. I don't have testing equipment that tells me how accurate this thing is but I know it's working for 2 reasons.
My house temp control is set to 70 degrees and that's what it says on this unit. I recently repaired my whole house humidifier. Before it was fixed, ThermPro reading was around 13%. After a few days running the whole house humidifier, the ThermPro reading increased to 35%. My humidifier is set to 45% but I can't expect that unit to reflect the true levels in my house. Perhaps if I bumped my humidifier up to 55%, the Thermpro would read 45%? Not sure, but it's worth experimenting.
I use the ThermPro to monitor temps/humidity for the area where I keep my Tarantula collection. It's kept in my office on the same floor as my HVAC system and I keep the door closed. I figure this is a pretty good control room for testing the ThermPro. I certainly hope it lasts a long time. I also have a big Cigar collection. All temp/hygrometers in that humidor are broke. I might buy another ThermPro and toss it in the humidor.
They supply old carbon batteries calling them "LONG LIFE". Otherwise I'd give 5 stars. I checked the thermometer at 71 deg. F, against my lab grade glass mercury thermometer, accurate to 1/10 deg. F. It's within half a degree. It's likely to follow a S-curve, which is normal. ( the S is laid sideways to view centered on the horizontal + - measurement line, meaning high at one temp, and low at another) The humidity is accurate according to the Weather Channel reading for our zip code. That's close enough for us to use with my home made humidifier I'm currently building that will outdo any we've seen for sale, and no filter to replace every week or two!
Seems to be pretty accurate, as far as temperature. I put two other thermometers next to it, for a couple days because I wasn't sure it was reading right. All three read the same. Not sure about the humidity, but I'm guessing it's good. I normally run the humidifer all winter but stopped for a cople days to see if the numbers changed. They went down to the 'dry' numbers. A day after I had the humidifyer running again, it went back up.
Hi all. So I bought 4 of these spread throughout the house to monitor our humidity (and therefore remind me to refill the humidifier) after they were featured in Jenna Marbles’s plant tour a few weeks back. (See YouTube) I was pleasantly surprised that did actually come with batteries and the packaging was very limited so super easy set up and clean up. It took me a minute to figure out the whole 24hr/lifetime thing... now of course I feel silly. I tend to keep ours on 24 hr bc it seems more helpful to have high and low reference points for the past day than since I turned it on... shrug.
We have 1 other very fancy complicated expensive calibrated humidity meter which only the hubs understands. He compared these to that as a standard, and they are well within the expected window of deviation for this price point. As I understand, even in the fairly high end consumer grade meters a difference of a few points is acceptable if not expected. And as these are comparatively lower end.. they fall into a window of 5-10 points. So there’s some info about that.
As far as the meters themselves in daily use, I am really liking them. Having both the kickstand and the the magnets are super helpful to get them exactly where they need to go. Funnily enough, the one thing I am missing from them... is a clock. Maybe that’s weird, I don’t know. But I’ve got these little screens propped up looking at me, and I keep expecting them to also have the time. Must be some subconscious hold over from the 90s... oh well. I definitely feel weird seeing all the environment info and then having to ask Echo the weather (for outside) and also what time it is.
Anyway.....
Do we like them? Yes!
Would we buy them again? Yep! Actually thinking about adding a couple more..
Do we recommend them? For indoor home use, absolutely!
For a science lab...ehhh... maybe invest in something slightly more accurate... that’s just an assumption though. You do you scientists.
We would set our nest and complain about it being so cold in our house. We replaced all our windows in our house with top of the line insulated windows and were still always cold. We put a humidifier on our furnace and the Nest always showed our humidity was low. Had the furnace company back out to check the humidifier and he recommended this product to us. Ordered this set it up and were we surprised. The Nest is actually 4 degrees off and their humidity level was nowhere near accurate. I guess that is how the Nest saves you money. You set it for 72 degrees and it is only actually 68 degrees. Just as I suspected the Nest is just a gadget with a bunch of hype. If you have a nest I recommend you purchase this to find out the true temperature in your home.

Description
Equipped with professional grade sensors, the ThermoPro TP-55 provides most accurate measurements, be it for humidity or temperature, allowing you to be aware if adjustments are necessary for your household. The TP55 is not just highly accurate but extremely user friendly with a backlight for those nighttime last minute checks on current readings before bed. That’s not all, no longer will it be necessary to unmount the device off your wall or fridge to switch settings, simply use the touchscreen display. Furthermore, it provides an abundance of valuable information, such as displaying 24 hour/all-time high/low records and current trends for both humidity and temperature and humidity level icons that indicate if your home is too humid, too dry or just right! Features: 1. 4” large display for easy usability, includes optional backlight and simple touchscreen 2. Professional accuracy 2-3%RH and ±1°F/°C to provide the most reliable readings possible3. Wide temperature range from -58°F to 158°F (-50°C ~ 70°C), humidity range from 10% to 99% RH 4. Measures humidity and temperature conditions every 10 seconds, so you can regulate your household for maximum comfort 5. Displays temperature and humidity trends, giving you the chance to preset your humidifier and thermostat to react the current trend 6. Measures current readings and compares to daily/all-time records, so if you thought it was too hot for a sweater yesterday, you can adjust your outfit appropriately 7. Humidity level icons to indicate if your home has low, comfortable or high humidity 8. Both Fahrenheit degree and Celsius degree are available at the press of a button 9. Low battery indicator 10. Designed with a table stand, mountable backing and a magnetic backing for optimal placement around your household Package Contents: 1 x Temperature and Humidity Monitor 2 x AAA Battery 1 x User Manual
I purchased this specifically because I saw it had a backlight, which for my purposes (being able to see it at night, preferably from bed) is vital. In order to activate the backlight you need to press a touchscreen button and then the backlight only stays on for 15 seconds. My gripe with this is that you need to have a reasonable amount of light in the room in order to read the screen to know where to press to activate the backlight. But if you already have enough light that you can read the screen to locate that button, why do you need a backlight at all (since you can already read the screen)? This doesn’t make sense to me. I’m keeping the product because had I read the item details more clearly I would have known you can not just leave the backlight on, and the product is great otherwise, but that seems really silly.
This is a great little product. Big digits for my older eyes to see. Lights up with backlight by a touch button which is wonderful. Stays unlit until I touch it. That means it doesn't keep me up at night. It turns off automatically in several seconds, allowing me enough time to see the data, so I'm really happy there.
I bought this for the humidity function, not the thermostat. I already have a thermostat in the room. But since my bedroom is usually very hot compared to the other rooms in the house, I wanted to measure the humidity as well as the temperature. I don't have any other humidistat so I can't compare if it's accurate or not, and I don't see any calibration on it. But I dont think its necessary at this point for me. All I wanted was a general idea of the humidity so it appears to work like I expected.
It doesn't agree with my other thermostat. It took a full 24 hours for it to get close to what the other thermostat shows, but it's still off by a few degrees. I think thats ok, as it's just a guideline, and my other thermostat might be incorrect. I've moved it around the other thermostat thinking it might be off a degree by moving it a few inches, but it still stayed the same.
It's very heat sensitive. If i pick it up and walk a few feet, sometimes both gages changed by a few degrees almost immediately, perhaps from body heat. However when I put it back next to the other thermostat, it took several minutes to go down a degree.
All in all, I like it and would recommend buying it. It's pleasant to look at and easy to read. Seems well made and sturdy enough to last years.
I found it humorous that I had bought two of these (one for the workshop, one for the garage) and set them up side-by-side. Then I read the instructions and discussion on accuracy. There was something about "the only way to be sure they are accurate is to buy two of them and they should be within so many degrees of each other." That was funny because I happened to buy two and they were probably just at the edge of the stated tolerance if not slightly outside (I believe they were up to 3 degrees apart at one point). If you are doing something scientific, these won't work. For my use, I just wanted to know humidity in the shop (for wood) and temp in the garage (for fluids that might freeze) and this is very nice, easy to use and I really like the backlight feature and the triple mounts (magnet, screw hole or stand). The screw hole mount could have been a little bigger since a standard drywall or deck screw head was too big. Would get a 5 star if more accurate.
Great !! Using this two months now and it shows accurate temperature and humidity. On several cold days in December in NY, I compared it to the digital wall thermometer that runs my heating/cooling system - it read exactly the same when I placed it close by. I tested the humidity gauge by taking it out of my bedroom which was showing only 25% humidity and on a rainy day I placed it on the floor just inside an open door to my deck. Within a minute the gauge began to digitally rise until it reached 85% so I know it is working. Hope it continues to work this well. It stands up on a level surface or can be hung on a wall. Delivered quick and well packaged along with an email from the sellers checking with me to see if everything was ok and with a contact number if I had any questions or concerns. They also offered an extended warranty for free if I register the unit. Wow !!
The display is nice and large to read from a distance of 3 to 6 feet. I have mine on my refrigerator. There are magnets to stick the unit on the door. The best thing I like about it, is the 24 hour minimum and maximum readings. It is very helpful as I am recording how well the in-wall air conditioner is working. It'd be awesome if I could collect the data wirelessly with low power bluetooth, but that isn't an option with this line of product.
The accuracy seems to be fine. It's pretty easy to check the temperature accuracy and mine has always been +/- 1 degree fahrenheit. The hygrometer part of it I can't tell as I don't have any way to reproduce a known value. I've heard said that 50% humidity is comfortable at 72F. It's always between 45% and 60% depending on what the air conditioner can keep up with. Which seems reasonable. I hope this unit will last a LONG time. I'm hoping for 20 years or more (with appropriate battery replacements of course).
