Rubbermaid Spring-Top Lid Trash Can for Home, Kitchen, and Bathroom Garbage, 13 Gallon, Black

For everyone who thinks they got the wrong size lid, or their lid only sits loosely on top of the bin, this is what you need to do. Pick up the lid and flip it over so you are looking at the underside of it. Examine both of the short sides closely. You will notice on each short side, there are two plastic tabs/fins that appear to have hooks at the end. Put the lid back on the bin, and press down firmly on one of the short sides till you hear the lid snap into place, then do the same on the other side. Once one side is clipped on, you may have to press the edges of the lid into place before pressing the lid down on the other short side. My lid fit tightly onto the bin so I had to press the bin side in just a bit to get to the lid to click into place on the second side.
This is an excellent bin for a reasonable price, I'm very happy with this purchase.

UPDATE: I have been informed that I am an idiot and this trash can is me-proof. I was loading the bags incorrectly. After being shown the correct loading process, I have zero complaints with this trash can. In fact, I have bought two.

Well, it's definitely toddler-proof. So much so that I can't figure out how to get the lid to stay in place. The latch works great, but the lid does not fit on the trash can itself.
Ok, so, pros:
*Great, large size
*can't beat the price
*The latch works wonderfully
*It is, definitely, a trash can. I asked. I don't think it lied to me.
*I can almost fit inside it, so that's cool I guess

Cons:
*I'm an idiot and can't get the lid to stay on.
*It doesn't do my chores for me. Which wasn't promised, but I can dream.

Great garbage can does exactly what its supposed to and seems to keep the smell in and my favorite part is it holds the bag on th inside so it doesn't show or slip! Overall a great buy

We were searching for a new trashcan and stumbled upon this on Amazon. We love feature where you can use the metal supports to hold your bag in place. Superior quality, excellent durability and a great price. The picture I've attached is of the metal supports to hold the trash bag in place.

My wife kept complaining (rightly) that our little recycling wastebasket was useless. Too small. Bags didn’t fit. So I bought one of these. She laughed about the ‘romantic’ gift, but then we both decided we really like this thing. The bags (we use Glad 13 gal tall kitchen recycling bags, 2 ft x 2 ft 3 3/8 in x .90 mil) are simple to put in (just lift the wire supports, pull the edges of the bag up around the wires, and snap them back in place. The bag is held snugly in place and wide open, the top of the container pops open so it’s easy to use even if your hands are full, and it closes tightly (no odors in the garage). And it seems pretty sturdy after a couple of months of use. My wife has thanked me more than once, so I guess it was a pretty romantic gift after all!

What does one say about a trash can?! It hasn't broken, yet. It looks like a trash can; sets like a trash can; holds garbage like a trash can; smells like a trash can; by George, I think it might be a trash can!! Whooda thunk it!
The one thing I don't like about it is the way the bag handles raise to hold the bag in place. It's a two-piece, half oval system, beginning in the center of the front and back, raising the otter edges 'higher'. I use the term higher loosely here because it doesn't rise much, or enough in my opinion, and often seems more of a hassle than a perk. But, if you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want all signs of an actual trash bag inside your trash can to be hidden, then I suppose it's the can for you.

A trash can is a trash can...this one is slim which is nice. Here are a few suggestions so the handy dandy step-on feature actually works and inserting a 13 gal. trash bag.

#1. Align the two ears into the slots. This is a no-brainer. #2. Get yourself a nice 24 oz. Deadblow hammer, or any hearty hammer laying around the house like a single jack or a 2lb. ball peen...just as long as it's hefty. #3. Smack projecting ears a few times to convince the ears to "snap" into place. It might take half a dozen vigorous blows to achieve that goal. You'll be making too much noise to hear the "snap" so eyeball the slot to make sure both sides are seated. Voila! I only had to sit looking at this Can for a couple of weeks, after having tried unsuccessfully a few different more gentle methods, before deciding BRUTE FORCE was needed. Now the lid will NEVER come off (short of using a hacksaw).

Concerning the bag. Open the bag so you can stand on the band and gently but firmly stretch the bag. Try not to get too enthusiastic or you'll end up with a torn bag. Oops!

I had a problem in the house and didn't realize it emanated from the kitchen garbage, the uncovered garbage generating gnats. I added this garbage can and the tight cover removed all fly problems. It has a foot actuation for the lid and it hasn't broken in months of use, unusual for this type of set-up. To be sure, my roommate uses the step feature to open the lid whereas I simply lift the cover. The step-on pedal to open the lid is such that you must be right in front of the garbage can to open it, a minor problem unless you're in a crowded kitchen.

The Rubbermaid was bought to replace a kitchen trash can that the open lid function stopped working. This can on the other hand has been in use for almost 3 years and still opens just as it should. We have complemplated a stainless steel can yet have been impressed that the black rubbermaid is easy to clean and does not show any fingerprints like stainless tends to. The 13 gallon size is a good fit for the space at the end our our kitchen counter. Considering how long it has lasted the value was excellent.

The can is a bit too narrow to be used as a household recycling bin, and it's small enough that it doesn't hold much. We have to empty it frequently.
However, the symbol on the side makes it easy for guests to tell which can is for recyclables. It's also reasonably durable. If you do not go through many recyclables, or are not recycling things like cereal boxes often, it might not be bad. It would be fine for just paper in an office setting. For the cost, I do not regret the purchase, but I'll be on the lookout for something larger.
