Aprilaire 413 Air Filter for Aprilaire Whole Home Air Purifiers, MERV 13 (Pack of 2)

I didn't realize when we had a new furnace installed that the replacement filters were so expensive. I also didn't realize that they can not be purchased at big box hardware stores. Luckily, they only need replaced every six months. The filter obviously works, due to the fact that it is very dirty when I change it and we seem to have to dust the furniture less often since getting the new furnace/AC. I'm giving a 5 star review because Amazon offers the best prices on these filters.

Note: There are 2 models of replacement filters that fit. The 410 and 413. The 413 filters smaller dust particles than the 410 and is recommended for people who suffer from allergies/asthma. The 410 is typically a few bucks cheaper.

This Aprilaire 410 Air Filter looked and fit exactly like the filter that was installed with our furnace and it shipped quickly. Perfect replacement and it was very easy to install. I bought two filters and they arrived in a much bigger box than I was expecting. Inside the outer box were two single filters, each in their own box with the two boxes taped together. The directions are on the box if it is your first time installing a new filter. Basically, 1. Turn off your furnace or air conditioner. 2. Open the door where the filter is kept. 3. Remove old filter (just slide it out). 4. I found it easiest to fit the filter to the grooves on the bottom first, then opened up the filter vertically to fit the grooves on the top. 5. Slide the filter all the way in, making sure both the top and bottom are fitting flush. 6. Place the cover back on. Make a note or set a reminder for the next filter change! 7. Turn your furnace or air conditioner back on. We have the furnace and an air conditioner so were told to change these filters every six months. I've heard the best thing you can do to extend the life of your furnace is to regularly change the filters.

Ordered these late 2 days ago and there here, pretty fast. Yep, these are the real thing - Aprilaire 413's and at a pretty good price. Just had a new furnace installed and decided to add the Aprilaire 2410 filter unit. I could tell the difference immediately. I came from an old furnace with super high BTU, super low efficiency and it did not use outdoor air. My indoor air was hot, dry, and full of recycled burnt house dust. No kids or pets but my nose was crackly dry and I had a hacky cough every morning. This unit has made a huge difference and I'm really sold on it. My 2410 was installed with a #410 filter which as I said is great and after reading the literature I saw where the #413 filter, which is even better, also fits. The specs from the Aprilaire site claim that the 413 grabs virus & bacteria beyond what the 410 takes out plus the 413 does better than the 410 in 3 significant areas: 0.3-1 micron Virus, 1-3 micron dust, and 3-10 micron pollen/mold. In any case the #410 are 4 inches deep while the #413 are 6 inches deep and this is one case where more is probably better so I got the #413s. The only drawback I could envision is that if you forget to swap out a super dirty 6 inch furnace filter you are seriously choking and overworking your furnace. Small house, no pets, and my AC unit is not connected to the furnace ducts so I plan to change my filter once a year and not the recommended 6 months. If you are considering an Aprilaire 2410 or similar unit my advice is a strong yes. This video really helped me see how it is set up and maintained.

TL;DR: I use it. I will buy it again. I recommend it. My 4 stars means 'great product'.

(Please note: I reserve 5 stars for over-the-top outstanding; if everything gets five stars it becomes meaningless. My 4 stars is everyone else's 5 stars - it means the product is good, I'll buy it again, and I recommend it. It's does just what I *expect* it to do; no better, no worse. I do the same with standing ovations at plays and live performances, btw... Usually I'll know within a few minutes it deserves a standing ovation; it's beyond expectations.)

My favorite way to evaluate something: if I knew then what I know now, would I buy it?
This filter: Yes. I would, and will buy it again. I recommend it without reservations.

How I installed the filter:

Open Amazon package.
Pull down attic hatch, unfold ladder steps.
Climb up ladder.
Forgot filter, have daughter throw filter box up ladder. Miss. Repeat; catching box this time.
Crawl over to air conditioner (low ceiling in attic...)
Open filter box.
Lift cover off air conditioner.
Slide old filter out. Ick! Full of dusty and crud. (we got the 410 filter last time; better 413 this time)
Open new filter box, slide filter out of it.
Pull apart to open it. (accordion-like)
Slide bottom piece (slightly) onto air conditioner. Bump nearby chimney so it falls off (filter from air conditioner; the chimney didn't fall off)
Slide bottom piece onto air conditioner again.
Slide top piece onto air conditioner. (being careful not to bump the chimney again)
Push both pieces to slide filter into air conditioner. Slides right in, fits perfectly. (410 did too)
Replace cover over the filter.
Crawl back to ladder. Toss empty box down to daughter. (don't toss old filter unless you want an upset dust-covered daughter!)
Crawl back down ladder, carefully carrying old filter.
Put old filter into trash bag.
Fold ladder steps up, push attic hatch closed.
Put trash bag with old filter in garage. (awesome daughter already put new filter box into recycling bin)
Wash hands.
Congratulate self on doing a wonderful job. Family stands around smiling and applauding; bask in their adulation. (not didn't happen... - but congratulate self and cross off the 'to-do' task)

It took longer to write this - and probably for you to read this - than it took to actually change the filter.

Air conditioner is immediately working better - cycling quicker than before. I can't actually tell, but I'm sure our air is cleaner. (that's not a reflection on the filter; more on me...)

Make a note to change it again in six months or so. Cheap and easy way to keep the air conditioner working better!

Summary:
I use it. I will buy it again. I recommend it.

Excellent product! My son has extreme allergies and asthma and these filters - changed once a month - have given him good sleep and relaxing days, while he is at home. The price seems high, if you compare it to a 3M 1" filter, but it is so much more effective and efficient. Moreover, what is the value of your health?

We had a new furnace installed last year and these are the filters it requires. On the plus side, these are very good filters, picking up a huge amount of dust and keeping it out of the house's air circulation system during the winter. On the negative side, we find that the filter fills up and needs to be replaced more often than we were told to expect. We live in coastal California and our winters are quite mild, so the furnace does not run for as many hours a day as it might in a colder climate. And this year was even warmer than most. We were told the filter should last at least 6 months, which is pretty much the whole heating season here. Since this is a new furnace, however, I thought to check the filter at about 4 months and was surprised to see that it was completely full of dust and needed to be replaced already. And this was with all new duct work too, so the filter wasn't picking up dust from old ducts.

So while it is a good filter - certainly not the $3 ones you get from the big box stores - the flip side is that you will be replacing it often. We'll probably be replacing it twice in every heating season; I can imagine that in cold climate you might have to replace it every month, which could run into real money.

I just wanted to give it 5 stars and be done with the review, but they require a description on Amazon...so I'll post my mom's secret chocolate chip cookie recipe here instead (not so secret anymore, is it, Mom!?):

4 cubes butter, softened
2 heaping cups dark brown sugar (packed, then heap that shiz)
½ cups white sugar
2 tablespoons vanilla
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
3 eggs
6 cups flour
1 bag chocolate chips (semi-sweet or sweet)

Mix BY HAND all ingredients, except flour and chips (mixing by hand makes them taste better, trust me).
Then add flour and chips and stir BY HAND. Bake @ 350 for 9-11 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Enjoy the preciouses.
Note: makes a buttload of cookies, so you might want to halve the recipe.

I had a new furnace installed in 2016, along with an Aprilaire filter unit. I was having some renovation work done on the house, and apparently the contractors were running the A/C the whole time. When my thermostat reminded me it was time to check the filter, I found that it had about 5 lbs of drywall dust and other construction debris blocking most of the pleats. I was able to vacuum out the heavier stuff, but there was no saving the filter. Replacements for these can get pretty pricey, but I was able to pick up this OEM replacement at a good price, and shipping was lightning fast. Very pleased with the purchase.

This filter is great! We bought our first one in mid-December and our system just prompted us to change it (in mid-June)! We have two large dogs (Golden and Lab) and two cats so lots of fur! I love that it's so inexpensive (compared to when we had to change half a dozen filters prior to the whole house filter being installed): the guy who installed the unit told us the filters were $70 and I KNEW I could find them cheaper on Amazon.

Cheaper and it last 6 months? Plus, it really does work great! WINING!

I've purchased several of these over the past 3 years and they work great. The local hardware stores don't carry these and the HVAC dealers want over $100 to order these. I replace these twice a year and so far have been thoroughly satisfied. My kids along with myself have seasonal allergies and we definitely notice the difference when we upgraded to this filtration system vs. the traditional 1" type that you replace monthly. I will definitely continue buying these.
