About 3 years ago I saved up and bought a Thermapen for about $100 because the reviews were excellent. I have used it ever since, and love it. But this week I saw an instant(?) thermometer on sale at Amazon for $10.99, and I wanted one for travel. So, I took a chance, and got it yesterday. (Pic below- the new one is red). As soon as I got it I wanted to test the speed and accuracy. I tried it, side by side, on some bread just coming out of the oven. They showed the same temp within a second of each other. Tried it again this morning on boiling water for my tea. Exactly the same temp in exactly the same amount of time. I don't know if it will hold up long-term, but I'm really happy !
I am a big fan of America's Test Kitchen. They do an extensive amount of reviews and testing of kitchen products. One of their reviews was for a meat thermometer. They recommended Thermapen which cost about $100. I little too steep for my budget. One of the reviews on this ThermoPro thermometer was from an owner of the $100 Thermapen and did a direct comparison between the ThermoPro and the Thermapen. They stated their performance (accuracy and speed) was nearly the same. So for a nearly 10 to 1 price difference, I went with the ThermoPro. I was not disappointed. It works great from reading meat temperatures to reading hot oil temps the thermometer works great. I would recommend this thermometer to anyone.
I like this thermometer. One of the things I like best about it is that it takes a regular AAA battery. I will not have to buy a much more expensive "button type" battery like my last thermometer used.
Dollar for dollar this is the best cooking thermometer on the market. It is quite fast and goes up to 500° F. This is great for fish Fry's. It seems to be accurate. Mine does not stay completely closed. This is the only reason I did not give it five stars.
The product is plastic so my first thought was that it was a cheap product. To my surprise this thermometer works like the ThermaPen at a fraction of the cost. It is handy and gives the temperature close enough to instantly for my satisfaction. The probe pops out with the push of a button. There is a simple on/off button to save on battery life which is a standard AAA (included) and not an expensive button type. Great addition to my kitchen.

This is the second digital cooking thermometer we've purchased, but the first ThermoPro. The other one we picked up at the store for less than $10, the selling point being that it had "instant read" on the packaging. Wrong! The 'other' thermometer took FOREVER to read the temp--over 25 seconds!--and it was getting slower and slower. Instead of fiddling with replacing the batteries or anything like that, we shopped on Amazon and decided to try the ThermoPro line based on all the positive reviews. And we're glad we did! This thermometer is SO MUCH BETTER and we're not going back!
Pros:
- Quick read, less than 10 seconds, usually around 5 seconds. Seconds count when you're taking meat or baked goods out the oven to check temps.
- Easy to use and read. Large digital readout.
- Sensitive probe. The end of the probe is what reads the temp, so you don't have to push it in very far before it's starting to read the temperature.
- Accurate.
Cons:
- Can't think of many ... maybe only that the probe is a little "wobbly" when it is folded back in. It feels like, in time, it might not fold in all the way and stab unsuspecting hands or fingers when it's in the drawer. But it's not an issue right now. Other than that little thing, we're happy!
In short:
Pros:
as accurate as claimed
uses AAA battery vs. much more expensive specialty watch style batteries.
Cons:
maybe not quite "instant".
I suppose 'instant' is a relative term. I've found that this thermometer takes about 10 seconds to dial in on a temperature. I don't necessarily fault ThermoPro for this, because I doubt anyone can get a thermometer to react and display a true temperature that quickly. Still, when advertised as thus, one's expectations are raised. (the reason for 4 star instead of a 5 star review)
In the product description, the makers claim that it's accurate to plus or minus .9 degrees Fahrenheit in a range between -58 and +572 degrees. To test this assertion, I measured the temperature of a bowl of ice water and a pot of boiling water. The ice water (stirred, not shaken) measured 32.5 degrees and the boiling water (bubbling large) measured 213.5 degrees Fahrenheit. I'd say those numbers are well within the .9 degree specs.
I've used this to measure temperatures on steaks and learned that the trick is to measure the steak away from the heat source. Don't poke the thermometer into the steak while it's in the oven or on the grill. The thermometer reads higher, I think, because it's measuring the ambient air too.
This thermometer has served me well in keeping me from overcooking steaks.
I would say that, for the money, you can't really go wrong with the ThermoPro TP03A. If there's another "instant" thermometer that delivers a temperature in something closer to one or two seconds, I'd like to hear about it. Has anyone found one?
The most important is temperature check and this is accurate to the tip. The position of the tapered sensor is hard to get in the right spot. It looks like the thin taper would be the spot of reading but it seems to be only the very end of the tip. The housing is very weak plastic and feels fragile. The spring to open the sensor needle is very weak and sometime barely opens the sensor. When closed the sensor is barely inside the housing and has been caught on a few time. The temp accuracy is good at the tip. Still strong and accurate after two years of frequent use
I love to cook and previously had a really cheap thermometer for measuring internal meat temperature. After overcooking a few nice cuts of lamb, I decided to up my game in the meat thermometer department. I did not feel like spending the money for a thermopen but decided to give the thermopro a try based on the reviews. I am very happy that I did! It is far more accurate than the one I was using before and I nailed a perfectly medium rare piece boneless leg of lamb a few days ago.
With regards to the quality of the device, the plastic on the body is pretty lightweight and feels a bit cheap but I haven't had any issues so far. It may not be as rock-solid in feel as a device that costs 3x more, but it does a great job as a meat thermometer and as long as it delivers in that area I have no complaints.
4 stars for the quality of the device overall, with the 5th star subtracted for the feel of the plastic on the body. However, as noted above it is important to emphasize that the cheaper feeling plastic body has not caused me any issues whatsoever at this time.
Bought on Amazon for $10.99: used it to check cooking temp of steaks and chicken on the grill. Worked great, just pressed the button on the end to extend the probe and pressed the on/off button once. Temp was displayed in a few seconds and the meat turned out perfectly done. Pressed on/off button once to turn it off. I checked for accuracy of reading with iced water and it was high by 1.2 degrees (close enough for my purposes). I leave it on the end table in the living room and check the room temp by turning it on without even extending the probe. I checked the air conditioner output temp; this took a little patience as it took a minute or two to reach a steady temp. Make sure to take the clear plastic wrap off the battery or you won't get a reading and you might think you got a bad thermometer. I got an email from the seller (itronic) stating that they stand behind their products and giving a phone number and a link to an online chat if I need any help.
